The home player like myself would probably scrutinize minute details in perceived tonal
quality. In a band setting, with the guitar in the mix most audience members won’t hear things like “overtones” and “note bloom”. The benefit can be formrhe player though. Having a set of pickups that you really dig that is dialed into your rig will enhance your playing through sheer enjoyment.

IMO pups are just one part of the equation , all will sound similar if the basic recipe is followed and some voicing changes are done with the magnet type and how much its charged.
for me the amp , speakers and the volume that i paly make the most difference, at low volumes it relay doesn't matter if you have real PAF , best boutique PAF , CB or BB all will sound roughly the same . in 99% of the cases its also the psychological effect something more expensive is better than what i have and will deliver the desired tone .

I disagree that pickups with the same general design sound similar. I think the pickup also has a huge effect in the signal chain.

I also disagree that lower volumes emphasize how similar pickups of similar designs sound. A 100 db pedal distorted EL84 powered amp would sound more similar between pickups rather than low volume cleans.
