We decided to make a padauk pickup ring for this weird firebird build, so this one is effectively wrapped up. I do still need to make a truss rod cover and a back plate for the switch, but those are minor tasks. The hard work is done and it sounds really good! Three independent volume controls with a master tone...kind of a weird setup but it's what my uncle wanted and it works well.

Work on my 6/12 Strat double neck stalled when I tested the 12 string neck template and made a dummy neck. If I matched the tuner spacing on the almost finished 6 string, there wasn't enough space between each string behind the nut. The shape was a copy of the Fender design with slight modifications, but without the poorly designed and hard to obtain string tree, the spacing changes. My preference is to use a bar like a Floyd Rose equipped guitar.

Tonight I drew this out (as I should have done in the first place) and redesigned the headstock. The base is wider, shaped roughly by tracing part of a Tele headstock. The end is very slightly narrower. End result is the rake angle of the tuning pegs changes quite a bit.

Now the strings move apart rather than together as they leave the nut and head to the tuning pegs. I haven't checked the string thickness but it shouldn't matter, provided the nut spacing is correct (which I will double check with a dummy).

Something I start in summer, finished up in November. Specs: Ash Tele Body (Heavy AF,12 frickin pounds), Minwax Stain, Nitro Lacquer Clear, Mighty-Mite neck, DiMarzio Pickups: LiquiFire in neck & Super D in bridge (the Hessman set), 3-way switch, CTS pots, Fender "Grease Bucket" wiring, chrome "Hipshot" bridge, Fender locking tuner with vintage buttons. Tone samples as follows, 1st clean section, middle postion neck and bridge in parallel. 2nd clean section neck only, 3rd & 4th section distortion, bridge only. Musical parts by me, something I wrote back in 2000, ending a little FREHLEY ditty!

I just got this sexy bitch back from the paint guy after 7 months… On my “bench” for a little sanding to get the neck to fit and then add all the hardware. Hoping to hand this over to its new owner before New Year’s.

Finally had some time to get back to working on guitars.

Drilled holes for pots, switch slot, and input jack hole.

The plan tomorrow is, bridge inserts, zpoxy grain filler on body, & install frets.

Drilled holes for bridge anchors, glued in some tabs to screw rear control cover to, final sand & Zpoxy grain filled today.

Really brought the out flamed figuring in the walnut top.

Sanded back second coat of Zpoxy grain filler. Prepped for nitrocellulose lacquer.

Sprayed 3 coats of nitro before supper.

The walnut figuring is starting to emerge.

well as my table saw has become my work bench this router jig is still sitting on top of it. i still need to surface the plywood base so i can use my router to flatten stock.

since it got down to about 9 degrees here last week, I began sneaking things into my office using the window seat as a setup area and my desk for indoor work. The wife has been quite kind, pretending not to notice. The guitar is fighting to survive despite my repeated and continued boneheaded mistakes. finishing up the body, about to tackle final neck shaping, glue on the fretboard, etc. the stuff shown here is staged, not installed; checking measurements, having an awesome time!

Got the frets all tweaked, pickups in & wired.

It’s alive!

Pegcity hand wound bridge pickup, & Gretsch Filtertron in the neck.

A happy jammer.

A few tweaks yet.
Nut filing, string trees, and maybe a resistor to bring the brightness down on the Jazzmaster bridge pickup. Quite a difference between the Jazzmaster bridge(bright), & the Filtertron Neck(mellow).
I’m running 500K pots, might add a 470K resistor to ground on the bridge pickup to tame it.

Picked up a laser engraver.
I think I’ll be able to make some cool stuff.

Made a headstock logo for the guitar.

First prototype was on cardboard.

Then on some flamed maple veneer I had.

Set it on the headstock for a look. I’ll finish with clear lacquer, then glue on the headstock.
