Anvils are iron to deaden the hammer blows (in addition to being cheap). Some people like 4140 steel cause its super strong, but it can give you RSI because it rebounds the hammer significantly more.

Some Anvils are iron because it’s a lot cheaper. There is no other functional reason. Steel is better in all other respects. Mostly, a forged steel anvil returns nearly 100% of the energy of the strikes, the result being that a lot more work is accomplished for the same amount of effort.

Every blacksmith I’ve ever spoken to, or read about, all say the same thing without fail.
It takes 3x the effort to do the same work on cast iron, and the only reason people own them is because they couldn’t afford the better anvil.

The rebound you refer to is a good thing. You are more likely to develop a repetitive strain injury on iron because you have to make 2 or 3 times more strikes to do the same amount of work

As far as deadening goes, the chain on mine is extremely effective. The ringing is almost 100% eliminated

I duplicated a strat type body for a friend of mine. Started with a nice two piece Alder body blank.

A little over an hour in the CNC machine and voila!

Yeah - the guy I am doing it for wants to carve that himself. As soon as he said that I went, OK. I have not figured out a good way to do carves like that in fusion yet and I have a ton of other stuff to do. I was relieved.
