I've been watching classifieds here for a couple years (for no good reason). Seems like all the R8s are down maybe $200-300 across the board. Plaintops that used to be $2,500-2,700 are now more like $2,200-2,500 and the big tops that used to be $3,000-3,200 are starting to dip down under $3k. What I haven't really seen is R7s drop down below $2k-- seems more like the R8s are just bunching up closer to R7 prices.

Zowie! The speed at which R8's depreciate says, you best keep them rather than sell them. On the other hand, maybe as a percent figure, it's the same s any other guitar. The dollars are just bigger. Looks like the used market has some good deals if you're in the right place at the right time.

I think one thing to remember is that there are always going to be deals on stuff. Just because someone bought a 2013 R9 at 3k doesnt mean that ALL used 2013 R9's should be priced at 3k. There is the "right place at the right time, motivated seller, etc" to think about.

I actually think that values have held overall. The 2015's and 16's were initially a large price hike which affected the used market. That doesnt mean there still arent "deals" to be had.

The example given in the classifieds is also a "7/10" condition example per the seller...not having seen it in person and not knowing the seller - I can't say if the average person would say 7/10 reflects true condition, or if they are just underselling something to avoid any issues with an unhappy buyer getting a used but cared for example...but I think we can agree the majority of 3 year old historics have nothing more than limited marking and are home use examples...so any additional wear would be discounted accordingly, and could represent a great deal. As Tim did say in his initial post - flame and wear are factors...my point is simply burst color is a factor too.

The above post also hits on a great point..just because someone got a steal, doesn't mean everyone should expect it. Sadly, that's how our mind goes though...we see a great price on something, miss out on it for whatever reason (too slow, no funds, not buying at the time) - when we are in the market - we want to pay no more than the last guy, and if the last guy got a steal...we want one too. Of course if the markets hot - it sorts itself out as there are plenty of other buyers...but in a slow market, it just adds to the pressure to adjust prices and feeds the feeling the market is terrible.

djeffries, I was not referring to the 7/10 condition R8. There are a few listed recently below $3,000 that seem to just sit.

I think it really depends on the top I bought my dirty lemon for 3300 shipped almost brand new . Mine has a great flame , the other colors don't seem to fetch as much unless there is a ton of flame so again I'll say it all depends on the top ...the plain tops are priced much more consistently .

Someone just sold a WW R9 for 3K yesterday. it was a featherweight model but still a damn nice price for a handsome guitar.

And it is already for sale for $4250. I see a fair amount of recent R8s around the $2800 range. I find that to be the sweet spot. A nice flamed one in the low 3s seems reasonable to me.

Re: bolded above. Since I was the seller (and guitar is now sold to a local buyer who had no issues with any of it) I will say that you are exactly right. I will ALWAYS lean towards undervaluing the condition of the guitar than maybe what it really is so that if there is any debate over the condition...its that its in BETTER condition than the buyer thought.

But thats me. I cant speak for everyone.

It always depends on the flame. If you get a newer R8 with a great top it's worth alittle extra, but still a great buy compared to an R9 in my book. My R8s neck is the same as the R9s I've had. Depends on the year and the top, I've seen as low as 2800 up to 3700.

I'll second that and will add, all the pictures should not be taken in the sunlight.

Bollocks. IMHO the best way to sell a Guitar is take pics at all angles, in Sunlight, inside in daylight & also at night under lights (flash and / or normal lighting).

This way a buyer can see how a Guitar looks under a variety of lighting conditions.

Make sure you describe the lighting when sending pics.

Also no use of Photshop unless you do this as a separate thing & you disclose the full details. For example Reds are a PIA to get bang on without correction. If you correct to get them looking right, then make sure this is disclosed to the buyer.

I've seen quite a few FS ads here where PS has been used & not a peep about it from the seller, which is IMHO dishonest.

My 2c FWIW. :)

:cheers2:

That $3,000 WW R9 is already for sale for 30% more? I hate flippers. That's exactly why I don't cut screaming deals any more.

Two things.........are you buying a Top or a Guitar. :)

Secondly..........:wtf:........do you want another one for?

:cheers2:
Yeah, you're right. I guess I was considering buying a top because nothing really caught my eye. After giving it some thought, wtf do I want another one is right. :cheers2:

Sorry, I think once the guitar (or other peice of gear) has left your hands what someone else does with it is their business. Unless you were working out a specific deal for someone so they can afford it...then that would suck. I agree.
But If someone priced it so low it could be resold by the other party...thats on the seller..not the buyer. IMHO.
