What do you think about a mid 1980s P-90 Pickup?

My take on P90's is
1) Gibson P90s are good if they are not ceramic
2) Anything ceramic in a guitar pickup is a pandemic spreader center
3) Boutique P90's range from good to really, mind-blowingly good.
4) only thing possibly better is a Zhangbucker Firebird pickup.

Just curious why you didn’t like the Lollar?

A Lollar is far superior to a stock Gibson....I would stick with the Lollar.....

But what if the Gibson one sounded better to your ear in the guitar......would you stick with the inferior sound of the boutique just because of some misplaced prestige factor??

It's ALL subjective when discussing PU's ! " to your ear in the guitar" says it all.... In a live performance a few years back, my friend Harry Harpoon's Lollar smoked the stock Gibson I have...YMMV

Exactly.....so why are you suggesting to someone a change when you've not heard it 'to your ear in the guitar'......as you yourself suggest.

The stock P-90's in my '07 '56 reissue sound so good I wouldn't consider a replacement. I don't know if they are different from earlier era's or not. I have no other experience with p90's, but lot's of experience playing with humbuckers trying to find the magic.

I changed a one humbucker guitar to a P-90 because I had one and I didn't like the sound of the bucker. In another guitar I replaced two P-90s because I wanted a guitar with mini hums.

But I wouldn't swap humbuckers unless I really disliked the sound and can't get at least one good sound out of 15 amps :laugh2:
