Nowadays I work in a drunk tank. I'm a welfare worker with the Salvation Army, I have a degree in human science and a diploma in addiction studies. I've worked in various clinical positions in drug & alcohol services for the past 16 years - I've worked in rehabs as a counsellor & running therapy groups, I've been in the admin side writing care & treatment plans & also funding submissions to the Government.
The street level stuff that I do now is crazy. I work 4 days on 4 days off, 12 hour shifts rotating day & night shifts. I often don't know whether it's night or day, let alone what day it is. At work, a client dies on the premises on average every 6 or seven weeks. We have doctors & nurses on site but still get overdoses requiring ambulances every week.
The place I work is a huge building - 30 beds in the Intoxicated Persons Unit where I work, plus a 10 bed detox unit, plus an 80 bed hostel that provides 3 months housing. Getting abused by clients in some form is a daily occurrence - usually just being sworn at but sometimes they spit at you, now & then throw a punch. A staff member got stabbed a while back. Nothing like feeling appreciated!
We don't get too many success stories - but we do get some. We have regular clients who drink metho (methylated spirits) - but it's the one's on ice that are the most trouble. Nothing says paranoid like an icehead coming off a 10 day binge.
Sorry to be so long winded..........lots of you guys have really interesting work, but I feel kind of sorry for those who drive a desk, bored out of their minds.........
Thanks for doing what you do! Your efforts do not go unappreciated.
