Hi guys,

I bought a 2009 LP Studio a while back. It's all black, and has a wood grain. Just wondering what the official name for this type of top is?

I know they are out there, but I've never seen another one, and I'm tired of trying to describe it to folks. They look at me like I'm crazy. Plus I don't know what to search for when looking for a similar guitar.

TIA,

Your Hammer

Looks like someone dunked it in India ink and buffed it out.

I love it.
I do too. And I know it's inexpensive, and not "high end" but there's something cool about it. I have seen several Studios but never one like this. I still don't see a lot of them.

Oh absolutely. That’s overflowing with character. That thing looks amazing. The type of guitar that make its more high end siblings envious.

I love mahogany tops! Never mind the finish, does it sound great? Mine does :)

I think it does. Admittedly, I don't have the best ears, but plugged into a Marshall, it sounds pretty ballsy.
I think it looks fantastic..... i like how the grain pops.

@LtDave32 made me a DC Junior and the finish has a grain/pore filler in pearl that looks spectacular with a high gloss nitro clear over it.

Holy moly! That finish is gorgeous. Love the filler color and the gloss. I'm not a fan of unusual finishes because so many look tacky or just strange. That is a thing of beauty. It looks unique but also timeless, and that's a rare combo. Now -- for heaven's sake, get a black or white pickguard!

So OP @krauthammer if you get bored with the satin finish on the '09 Studio, some white filler and a blast of clear lacquer and you too could look like this ;)
Here’s a bit of the process that Dave and his wife Anna did to achieve this finish. It started pretty much as the OP’s studio ..... black on mahogany....

Then the pearl pore/grain filler.....

Then a lot of wet sanding between coats of clear nitro....
