If history serves me correct the LP was almost totally forgotten and not popular until Slashes LP replica help popularize that brand,

Not all of us wanted pointy pink and lime green guitars in the 80's.

Izzy was actually the cool guitar player in GnR for anyone paying attention.

I don't think it's a mistake for Gibson to protect their designs, however, this method was just LAME.

Generally, whenever I see JC he puts out this laid back John Varvatos "lifestyle brand" vibe. Considering he's a corporate CEO he seems like he identifies with his audience and he's definitely cooler than Henry.

Hiring Mark Agnesi was another step in rounding out the PR team with some real motherfuckers. In my eyes they've succeeded over the past 6 months in reestablishing Gibson as a Premium Players Brand.

This now begs the question - Why use Agnesi to be a narc?! Leave that to the legal team. It doesn't need to be a dirty little secret that they police their designs but I think it's a mistake to release a video, using our favorite talking head, to deliver the "warning".

I want to point out that in the video he says " This isn't about us trying to be Bullies or trying to stifle the Boutique Market Place!" "This is about us protecting our Legacy!".

Liars.
Just ask around how may people and small shop have received threats from them.

Don't let Gibson fool you. They don't like it when some one buys a Gibson shaped guitar from
someone else and not from them because lets be honest here..that's one less sale in their custom shop.

That whole video was a dumpster fire which is why they took it down.

Actions speak louder than words.

Oh and one other thing that's got me shaking my head...he says " Across generations and GENDERS!!!!"
WHY even bring Gender into this argument? That video was like some sort of left wing social justice
warrior crap.

Music is left wing social justice.

Gibson using that phrase is jumping on a trend to try and grab some sales. "Look we read the news and are trendy too, buy our shit"

There's nothing wrong with being a social justice warrior, if your goal is actual social justice. When the goal is to skim profits off the top while your actions don't really live up to the words, then you are whats referred to as "a bad person".

link? Even if the guitar they have DOES violate their marks, it is not illegal to own or play one or even sell it used.

So unless Gibson wants to offer a 50% discount to those players... They cant go bankrupt again fast enough.

Builders of counterfeit guitars (guitars sold with the intent for the buyer to believe it is a real Gibson) is a very valid thing to report.

Owners of a les paul - alike is another matter.

Agreed - Gibson should go after blatant counterfeiting of their instruments. Commonly referred to as Chibsons would be the first on the list. Guitars with the Gibson logo. I would imagine these to be the only credible threat to their brand and reputation.

Cheers Peter.

Hit-Nail-on-Head, Peter.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and only enhances the Brand. My own experience was to buy a "lawsuit" guitar (perfectly legal in Japan), but then wanting "the Real Thing," Grass Roots was helping G, not hurting them.

edit: I bought a Studio, an SG, two Historics, a Melody Maker, and was given a '78 The Paul ... so yeah, the "imitation" (a great guitar, btw) gave me a taste for The Brand.

On the other hand, counterfeit Chibsons are (IMHO) evil. Most folks buy them brand-new knowing they are fakes (Duh!), but after that other folks get duped (Sad).

Now, If I knew a luthier made a guitar to order that was masquerading as a G ... I would probably NOT turn him in. Not my business to do police work for G. Honestly, I think it's tacky to make a fake for whatever reason, but still ... it's even more tacky for a huge corporation to ask people to report small builders.

2 yen worth of opinion.

People buying the full-on replica would not be in the Gibson market anyhow.......they've gone there because Gibson themselves cannot (or choose not) to make the small details right.

And the dob-in thing is very Orwell 1984-esque

Remember when in 2010 Henry J. gave the "revolutionary" Firebird X a smashing start at the press launch in New York?

This video is an even bigger mess. I'm truly dumbfounded.
