"said he was suicidal, and said repeatedly that his choice was “liberty or death.” Ultimately he gave himself up without a fight."

"suicidal". Over what?

No one threatened his "liberty". He was free to go at several points during this debacle. He chose his own fate. All he had to do was walk away and go home. Self-important drama-junkie seeking his 15 minutes of fame.

So they finally decided on a descriptive title for these idiots: "Militant".

Apparently, it was all about the snacks...

Oregon standoff: Last four occupiers surrender at Malheur refuge | OregonLive.com

"..."We will pray you out," a woman's voice was heard saying at one point, but then Fry said he was pointing a gun at his head.
"I'm really confused right now," he said as the entreaties continued for him to leave the refuge.
Finally, Fry said he wanted a cigarette and cookie and started walking out."

..and it cost them their friend's life.

The only one who cost a life was the guy who chose to go up against LE after making threats against them. No one else was responsible for his death except his own self.

Sounds to me like he's building up to an insanity plea, but I'm not a lawyer or even really all that smart, in general.

I'm glad it's over with a fizzle rather than a bang .

Guess the free people of the US are generally doing OK, and folks working at normal jobs and trying to make their living didn't agree that this minor regional land use dispute was the equivalent of the stamp act or the Boston massacre.

I think the last guy sums it up pretty well. If you really want to give your life for a cause, and you think its truly important enough to justify death, do it.

Set yourself on fire in protest like some Tibetan monks did. If that's a little too foreign for the cowboy hat set , draw you gun and charge. Don't threaten suicide over the phone because you're "confused." That's teenage mental instability, not patriotism.

The essence of bravery in using civil disobedience to stand up to oppressive government force is that you really do expect to get hurt. The Indians who marched with Ghandi into a line of colonial police armed with clubs expected to be beaten to the ground, and accepted that as the price of their cause. The 60s freedom riders and vote workers understood there was a real chance of being beaten and killed. Not this "don't you dare hurt us or we'll tell the media" crap .

Now its like a Month Python film " Look, look, come and see the oppression inherent in the system. Look...he's oppressing me"

If you preach a brand of freedom that includes rugged individualism and self-governing, you should be able to back it up with rigorous personal responsibility. The boys in "Lord of the Flies" had a better grip on governance and responsibility.

They should count their blessings that the feds only reduced their carbon footprint by one.

What a bunch of dimwitted phonies.

I guess that the bottom line is that the Bundy's and to some degree, the Hammonds, probably hoped for more moral support by publicizing the whole thing via Facebook, Twitter and the rest of the internet.

Quite honestly, it could have worked out better if the Bundy's hadn't turned the whole sh!t into a 3 ring circus.

The idea that this could have been a false flag event to get the public against these sort of "revolts" isn't beyond my imagination. The Bundy's basically looked stupid.

What happens when a real uprising is actually required? Nothing? Waco 2?

To me, it sounds like the boy who cried wolf, but there wasn't a wolf. Although the Hammonds have been unnecessarily reamed. In my opinion.

If I was looking for a straw man, I'd find one with more brains than the Scarecrow.

It's called a Convention of States and it doesn't require any bloodshed, just good old fashioned, Constitutional behavior.
