Im back in the US and decided to do some window shopping and try out some teles. The shop in MN has several les pauls, customs that were nice but for $4000?!?! pass... Had a beautiful purple (nice but still pass) a green burst, some other odd colors, one horrendous denim blue with powder blue back and neck (big time pass!) I played around with a few teles, I like them but know I would have to do a refret as the frets are so small I dont like, fell in love with a special or some title tele, it has a huge neck but $1600... On my way out I see an old used les paul, 89 standard in I think it was a tobacco burst. It had black at the heal of the neck and on the sides of the body near the neck, sales guy said thats normal but not sure... It needs a little TLC, missing a nob and the pots feel a little loose. This thing plays NICE! I see a few issues (besides missing nob) the switch knob is cracked(big woop) and the binding on the trebble side of the neck has a little crack in it (couldnt feel it when playing though) The biggest issue I saw was strictly cosmetic, the tuner knobs were pastel green (normal for this time period?) I will go back and play it some more, I really liked it for they wanted almost the same price as a new standard. Another question, I thought the hardware was nickle on that period of guitars, but the pickup covers, bridge and TP only have a little wear on the outside edges, the inside of the pieces are still pretty shiny. The wear on the metal is not what Ive seen of aged nickle. what do you think... sorry no pics, when I go back Ill try to snap some shots with my phone. Do you think GC would pull the back cover and a pickup so I can take a look inside if I tell them Im interested in buying? For a 3 piece plain top (where arm sits has awesome figuring) in fair condition, do you think $1800 is fair?

Make them an offer. GC buys them at 60% of what they think they can sell it for (the asking price), and hardly ever more than that.
