the one with the bees sounds great! how did you set your guitar controls?
All controls were set to 10. :).

In theory, there shouldn't be much of the difference at that setting but I was
surprised that it was really noticeable.

I have received PM's from members who cannot believe that I did not use a real amp. :laugh2:

Alright, guys, I have no other .010 uF to compare with but here's a clip I did today to give you an idea on what the roll-off is like for this setup.

As always, my playing sucks. No excuses here.

Arrangement of clip:

First three parts - Bridge pickup with tone knob set at 10, 5, 0 respectively
Last three parts - Neck pickup with tone knob set at 10, 5, 0 respectively

SoundClick artist: VastHorizonMLP - page with MP3 music downloads

Your thoughts?

Hello MrRhoads,

I requested BB to have it as a sticky for a while.

Nope, no pedals of any kind. You wouldn't believe the rig I used. :naughty:

R8 -> Vox Amplug AC30 -> Computer with Audacity recording software :dude:

I just changed the caps and pots in my stock 09 traditional for an RS vintage upgrade kit with the Luxe bumblebee caps and 50's wiring with similar results. I realize the Luxe bees aren't vintage, I know they are surplus russian PIO caps. The mod opens up the tone (aka blanket analogy) while cutting the harshness and ice pick highs. I don't think my Luxe caps are quite as warm as your vintage bees, but amp differences can make a lot of difference as well. I Probably could have saved some money on parts buying elsewhere but the kit is awfully convenient. It's a nice upgrade, not a world changer, but nice.

imo the bee's def sound better. Stock were kind of harsh, opposite of the bee's.

also the bee's had a more defined low end

i know that might look like scrambled junk...but hopefully people understood what i was trying to say.

edit: i guess i was trying to say the tone was more round.

The 1st stock clip sounded harsh. The Bees sounded smooth/round to my ears. And more balanced/natural. That was a pretty cool test. Thx.

I'd have to agree also. I've been a orange drop fan for years, but this does change my thinking. Many of the differences are subtle and the untrained ear can't discern it. To some, it's like night & day and to others, no difference. Thanks for putting together a straight forward, no BS demonstration. :D

PS I like '50s wiring since I discovered the difference. If you want the '59 sound, you gotta wire it like one! :dude:

Stock sounded harsh and warbly.

Thx Vast. Loved the sound of the 50's setup.

Bees for sure...Nicer bottom end and sounded much more rock 'n roll than stock.

Good demonstration! I had very similar results when i switched to cts 500k audio tapers, K40Y-9 pio caps and 50's wiring. Love the open sound.

However, the 50's wiring seems to roll of the volume much faster than stock/modern wiring, leaving position 1-4 useless. Any suggestions as to how you solve this?

I think that's more to do with the 500k pots. Others will know better than me, but I think many LPs come with 300k stock. If you swapped out the pots at the same time as the rest, that might be it. Measure the resistance of your old pots to be sure.

wow. just wow. Am I the only person completely baffled by the tone from the bees?? I had no idea those caps would make that big of a difference
