Ok, there have been several people wanting to see a comparison of the Page #1 vs the Page #2. Well here it is!!! These vids are about 5:20 long. First I would like to say that I know I made a bunch of mistakes & I know where those mistakes are. So please don't point them out! I am an amateur & have never been paid to play. If I wanted it to be perfect I could have kept trying until I got it perfect. But it isn't supposed to be perfect. I want to take a poll & see who prefers the sound of the #1 vs who prefers the sound of the #2 (my mistakes not withstanding). I think I made more mistakes in one of the videos than the other, but that is not what I am after. I want to know which SOUND you prefer on these vids. So feel free to vote in the poll! And by the way, thanks to John at vanderbilly.com for the help in getting all of the guitar parts together!

By the way, I flipped the toggle to the middle position in the fast part of the solo (like Jimmy does) in the video for the #2. On the other video of the Jimmy Page #1, I did not flip the toggle to the middle on the fast part of the solo because the factory wiring is "out of phase" in the middle position and is not like the original recording. The out of phase sound makes the guitar sort of "quack" and I preferred to go with the bridge pickup instead. But on the Jimmy Page #2, the factory wiring is the normal in phase sound in the middle position. Thus, in that video I switched the toggle and then switched it back like Jimmy does.

Nice work John.

The backing track is really loud though, but in your vids #2 is muddier (less clearly defined). #1 sounds much better to me. FWIW.

Nice playing.

I love both, especially the color on #2.

However, I think #1 sounds more aggressive.

Yes, this #2 is one of the 3 or 4 best LPs I've ever seen.

I prefer number 2.....but then again I would say that wouldn't I? :naughty:

On a serious note though Number 1 sounds a little clinical and glassy, number 2 fits the sound on that piece of WLL IMO. The number 2 sounds a bit more like the T-top in JPs No.1 I think...

I too have painstakingly learned that solo with the help from good ole' Vanderbilly.....rewarding isn't it?

#1 is my pick, better clarity and definition.

But i suppose that there's something different in the recording, the backing don't sound the same in the 2 clips :(

i am playing the #1 in that pic, but not the #2. the #2 in that pic is signed; i did do a separate clip a couple of weeks ago on the signed one where i played the last 30 seconds of that live song. but in the video in this thread i played a non signed aged Page #2. the signed one has a more consistent flame on the top.

There is no doubt to my ears that the #2 plank nails the Page tone from that track! #1 is good but not the same timbre pup wise like the track if you are really trying to nail that original tone, gain feel, and overall vibe.

i like them both........don't know which i prefer yet

In the two vids, they sound really different...are they THAT different in person?

Do either of them have off-the-shelf pickups or does Gibson do custom builds for the JPP 1s and 2s?

You can not buy the pickups separate from the guitar. The JP1 uses an alnico 3 magnet and the JP2 uses an alnico 5 magnet (similar to BB Pro but wound differently). You could get close to the JP1 with BB1/2 (alnico 2 magnet). Some people claim to be able to replicate them or even better replicate the original Page pups. But not "off the shelf".
