Hello everyone,
I am currently looking at a sweet tobacco burst 90's Explorer, which unfortunately has a very weird (shady?) serial number.
It only has 7 digits and the weirdest part is that it is not engraved on the wood but on a silver chrome plaque which is fitted and screwed on a 5mm deep milling in the wood on the back of the headstock. Has anyone seen anything similar on another Gibson? The seller says it's from 1996 because it's handwritten on the wood under the plaque. According to an unconfirmed story this was done by the Dutch Gibson dealer in the 90's
for a reason that I not really understand yet. I post also a pic since I am not native speaker and my description might be confusing.
Thanks for any help

That is not factory. Gibson never used a plate for the s/n. I'd look for the original number under the plate, but that looks like a refinish, and it may have been obliterated when refinished.
