Interesting. I'll try out the Vox AC4 and lil nighttrain next time I go to Sam Ash if they have them. I'm going to steer clear of Blackstar due to my HT 40 having so many issues when I just purchased it 3 months ago. I also played the the DSL15H and thought it sounded decent. I liked the classic gain, and the gain of the OD channel when it was turned down real low. When the gain was half way or more on the OD it sounded a little too fuzzy for me. Has anyone has experience using pedals with the DSL15H?

I found that at home volumes the C5 stayed very clean for me, even with guitar volume dimed. I used a Fulltone OCD with mine and loved the tone. Of course I love that pedal with almost any amp.

yea, really the c5 is pretty clean, for a marshall... you just have to try it with what you want it for... the OCD isn't an amp emulating pedal, either. and sounds clean into clean or dirty...

I found the c5 too clean to be called dirty at bedroom volumes, and too dirty to be called clean :) I've told this story before... I went to the store cash in pocket to try and buy one... left with my cash in tact... it wouldn't do what I wanted it to do at the volume I needed it to do it :)

the demos that made it sound like a 5 watt plexi must have been CRANKED(way beyond bedroom volume)

you should also look at the egnater tweaker 15... it can be clean( I mean fender-esque clean!) or dirty and take pedals or take you to extremes.. even at bedroom volumes... plus it's loud enough to jam/gig if you wanted to... I love it. and used under $300

Clean on a 5 watter means you're using the guitar volumes :)

Turn up the class 5 and use your volume and tone knobs to clean/thicken it up. With guitar volumes on 10 it should be crankin'!

I'd use 9 volt batteries to power the OD and Wah, just remember to unplug the pedals when not in use or you'll drain the batteries. You can get a 'daisy chain' for your 9 volt wall adapter and 'jump' it across pedals, or even get a 'power brick' (see NitroDave08's pic for the DC Brick).

For now I suggest just getting a good sound from the amp and then trying a tubescreamer type pedal to get lead tones..

I tried using an adapter and daisy chaining the powers, but the noise that was introduced drive me nuts. I was looking at the Voodoo vs the DC brick and I happened upon one at a pawn shop for $100 less. It was a no brainer for me. The big power supplies have special filtering in them for the music world. And improve the sound tremendously.

So I've decided to sell my Blackstar HT 40 and purchase a Marshall class 5 instead. I wanted a better amp for playing at lower volumes, and my HT 40 has been giving me some issues. The class 5 only has a clean channel, so I'll have to buy an overdrive pedal if I want overdriven tones. I'm sure this is a newbie type question but if I decide to get an overdrive pedal, then how do I run this with my existing Dunlap wah pedal? I like the sound of my wah pedal on an amps overdriven channel. Do I just buy an additional connecting cable and run both of them through the front of the amp? Or should I get a pedal board and use both of them on that? I'm not even entirely sure what a pedal board is used for. Also, some recommendations for a good overdrive pedal would also be nice. I play mostly grunge and 90's alternative.
You probably already know this, but I will state it incase you don't know it. There is not a lot of clean headroom on the Class 5, and the 10" speaker can get a bit flabby as the volume goes up, especially with any kind of drop tuning.

I like the tone from the Class 5, but the lack of clean headroom took it off the radar for me.

yea, actually the main thing with the big power supplies like the pedal power are that the 9V and 18V outlets are isolated... so if one pedals draws more, it won't starve the others... with only a few pedals a daisy chain or the DC brick(which isn't isolated) will work fine. the DC brick is basically a daisy-chain

I had no noise introduced with the one-spot... but I have heard people daisy-chaining off their tuner would get some unwanted noise...

Do you get more clean headroom with the tweaker15?

yea! a lot!

and a lot more dirt too if you want it... if you haven't tried one, you should!

you also get an effects loop and a ton more flexibility than the C5

does it sound EXACTLY like a marshall or EXACTLY like a fender? or VOX? no.
does it get close enough that you don't care, plus adds a wide variety of other sounds right in the head? YES!

I'm probably still in the honeymoon phase a little... but I can see it replacing my blackstar... it's THAT damn good... I love my HT5, but wow does this bad boy sound good

Yes, do it man... Right now! :)

I did a 4 amp comparison when I purchased my Blackheart. I compared the Tweaker 15w combo, the HT-5H 2x10, the Class 5 combo and the Blackheart Handsome Devil combo. I walked home with the Handsome Devil. since it just sounded overall better than all of them. My Blackheart HD has sucn a beautiful clean tone that takes pedals really well and it can get to a nice British tone all on it's own at lower or higher volume levels since it has a master volume. This is something the Class 5 does not have that all the other 4 had, which I think a master volume is very important for home jamming.

Wah pedal first then your overdrive pedal. Check out the Fulltone OCD pedal for your OD. I also have a Class 5.

I second the Fulltone OCD. One of the best OD pedals for a Marshall amp and a good pedal to make a Fender amp sound like a Marshall.

Also the level control helps you bring down the volume while still getting decent OD tones and low volumes.

What preamp tubes come stock with the C5? If one were to want more clean headroom in the future, then would swapping the preamp tubes be a good idea?

Two ECC83, AKA, 12AX7. I have a C5 as well, the combo version. I love it! It's extremely loud and there isn't much clean headroom, so you could change the preamps if you wanted to. I haven't though. Here's a link you might be interested in:

As far as an O/D pedal is concerned, I'm a Fulltone fanboy, so I fourth (lost count) the recommendations for the OCD, but I'd also add the PlimSoul as well, which is made for combos, but can be used with heads as well. I use both my OCD and PlimSoul with all my Marshalls.

I ended up getting the class5 yesterday with a Pictronix fat drive pedal. So far I'm really liking how it sounds :]. I wouldn't really know how to do any of those type of mods unless there was a video that shows how to. I was just wondering what pre amps the C5 came with because I have 2 spare ECC83s's from JJ electronics.
