Bullshit! Mexicans call it futball.

Funny, cuz that was one of the comebacks I considered, but then I would have been guilty of pissing on it too.

I do appreciate you bringing that up though! It was on the very tip of my toungue. :applause:

and for the record... it's "futbol" to our amigos South of the border.

viva Mexico!
Seems they finally got over the mental block against USA with these two wins.
It was a hard and close game.Good playing from both teams.
The bottle throwing was a bit much though and I didnt get why the USA guy tackled the three Mexicans trying to help the USA guy up?

You know I have never been able to fully enjoy watching soccer/football. I certainly appreciate the skills involved, but for me, any sport which condones and really encourages players to throw themselves on the ground in a pathetic display in order to obtain a penalty is for sheela's and shirt lifters :thumb:.

I suppose I enjoy watching the "game" as such, just not the theatrics.

I cant sit and watch a whole game on tv,can sit through most of it though.Being at the game is so much better, great atmosphere.
Wellington have a team in the Aussie football leauge,First home game of the season this sunday :thumb:

There were a few "passionate" moments, weren't there?

There is a good solid rivalry there, so I didn't think too hard about the garbage tossing. I just hoped while it was going that he got the corner off clean without a malt or full soda being dumped on his head in mid kick. No harm, no foul...

Sure it is... so is this...

I'm pretty sure I left no ambiguity over what sport I started this thread about. Let's not have a pissing match over versions of a theme.

Did anybody else see the game? I know there was another match on in English at the time, so understandable if most missed it. I found it a very entertaining match, regardless of the outcome.

No, that is only football in certain parts of Australia. To the other, more important parts (i.e. New South Wales), it's known as cross country volleyball.

This is football.

No, that's AMERICAN football. REAL football predates that game. And the only time a foot is used on the ball is for a split second when a kick through the posts is attempted. A joke title for a game if ever there was!

With all due respect Mr. Vasco, you are about the three billionth person to have told me that in my lifetime. I've played the game since preschool. I learned that piece of sports trivia 36 years ago.

I exaggerate, but you get my point. I knew someone was gonna have to say it. No hard feelings here over it being you. Kinda played out though.

Could you expect anything less from ME??? :dude:

180gROC,

I'll be watching the USA games in the World Cup next year with great interest. They will do really well again. I think they lost to Germany in the later stages last time. They battered Germany but couldn't put away the chances they made, and got punished as a result.

I fancy them to get through to the last 8, or maybe even the semi-final. With a great goalkeeper like Tim Howard (Everton FC, of course!) they should go far.

No worries Mr. Vasco. I am quite used to it.

Like when I was a kid, dreaming that my national team might someday be good enough to compete with the world's best, I also dream of a time when I can have a conversation about the the game with someone across the pond, without being immediately reminded that the game is named differently there.

Not a big deal, but a dream...

I have to stick to my naming conventions, pissing match or no. When you say football, everyone knows what you mean. When I say it, there's room for doubt and to be clear it helps greatly if I specify. Humor me if you will.

The sport is still very young here. I grew up in the SF Bay Area, where the game was embraced and youth leagues were popping up way back in the 70's. It's true, that other parts of the country were, and still are slow to embrace the game. My love of it has been lifelong.

My son is now grown, and I'll expect in the next few years I'll be watching my grandson or daughter playing youth soccer. To me, that would be as big a milestone for the sport here as the US squad going deep in an international tournament.

Interestingly enough, recently I've become slightly more interested in volleyball too! :naughty:

JV, you will also have noticed, as an Evertonian, that Tim Cahill banged in 2 for Australia in their 3-0 win against Ireland on Wednesday evening. Australia are looking to improve on their perfomance in reaching the last 16 at the 2006 World Cup when they get to South Africa next year. In 2006 they were knocked out by eventual winners Italy 1-0, Italy getting a penalty in the 90th minute.
