Hi
New poster here, have already picked up lots of useful advice and drooled over pictures of many lovely guitars, I was hoping for some help in my next step.
I currently have a lovely Epiphone Les Paul standard in ebony but my head has recently been turned by some good deals on the Custom PRO in Pelham Blue Epiphone TV Pelham Blue Les Paul Custom PRO
Would this be a good move? Most of the hardware is improved and I love the way it looks. I really don't need a new guitar, but just look at it!
Thanks

The Custom would only be a minor improvement, unless your Standard has the older Epiphone pickups and not Probuckers. Then it could be a bigger improvement if you like the sound of Probuckers (which I do).

But other than pickups it's going to mostly be a visual improvement, so the question you have to ask yourself is "can I afford to buy it?" If yes, go for it I say!

Thanks for the replies.

My current Standard has humbuckers (Epiphone Les Paul Standard) and is a lovely guitar, but the Pelham Blue has turned my head.

I have only been playing for a little over a year, as a very latecomer to the guitar, but I'm loving it so far.

Thanks

If you want it and can afford it, buy it.

As others have said, it won't be a huge improvement but it will be another guitar that you own... and that's never a bad thing.

I've just picked one up on interest-free credit (it was only £299 anyway but no reason not to spread the cost) and it's a good guitar. In a couple of days when it's had its setup, neck conditioned, a new bone nut fitted, strings changed and pups replaced (can't stand the PRObuckers) it will be a great guitar.

I got confused when you said "I really don't need a new guitar"

You do REALLY NEED a new guitar, or a few. Just sit back and let the GAS set in.

My wife clearly doesn't agree that I 'need' it, she seems to think that one guitar is enough. Mind you, she thinks one bike is enough too, so is obviously wrong.
Davies - I was looking at the same deal, how does the colour look in reality? How do you (or anyone else kind enough to reply) feel the Probuckers compare to the Burstbuckers?
Thanks

In my limited experience with Burstbuckers (I only have one with a Burstbucker Pro, which isn't quite the same thing), the Probuckers sound very similar.

I have found I definitely prefer them over Gibsons 490R/498T pickups though. And slightly more than the Gibson 57 Classics.

If it tells you anything, the guitars I own and haven't swapped pickups for something else on, are the Gibson Studio Deluxe II (Burstbucker Pro/490R), the newer Epiphone Custom (Probucker 2 & 3), the Tribute+ (57 Classics), and the 72 Thinline Tele.

Blue Guitars have been turning my head more and more lately including this one. The Pelham blue is very nice. I have a garage full of bicycles that I am slowly turning into a room full of guitars. : ) With the custom pro you get the push pull pots for coil splitting. I guess depending on what type of playing you do this could come in handy or just be a useless feature never to be used. It's fun to experiment with though.

I have seen this color up close but on the ES-339 Pro and it looks really nice. The zzsounds website has several really nice pics of the Les Paul in Pelham Blue that get up close.

Mine looks more like this

than this

but it changes depending on what lighting conditions you view it under.

As for the probuckers - I've never played a guitar fitted with burstbuckers but I will say I'm one of the few who prefers the 'oomphier-ness' of Epis old stock pickups. The probuckers haven't got enough body for my liking.

I swapped them for a set of Wilkinson Hot zebras in my Trad Pro. Much oomphier.

I just called Andertons to discuss getting the Pelham Blue guitar and asked whether they thought it was worth the change. Working in sales I do appreciate an honest opinion, but I was a little surprised that he didn't recommend changing at all.

However, he then went on to suggest a Gibson 2014 Les Paul Studio Pro at a good price, but still £500 more than I was looking to spend! Fair play to him!

Controversially he suggested that it would be better than any Epiphone guitar, which I know is an argument that has been overdone many, many times.

So, he put me off the Pelham Blue, but other than that I have no idea what to do!

You're right, at the prices I've been offered the difference in price is £270, it's been a long week!
