Sorry....I just put aged RS True 60"s p/u's in my R9 and they are uncovered. I can hear a difference in tone from the BB's that were in there. Other then the true 60's being a much better sounding p/u, they are a bit more open and brighter then when they were covered. It really is up to what you like, the tone I like might not be the tone that you like. My advice to you is try them uncovered and if it's not to your liking cover them. Also remember what type of amp you are using, that has bearing on how your p/u's will sound..

An old teacher said, "The stupidest question is that which goes unasked". With that said, what is the best method to uncover a humbucker?

Let the soldering iron heat a while, Apply it to the outside to soften the solder around its points you can then use said utility knife to cut the solder Sit the pickup on its sides when doing this so no hot stuff falls into and around your coils possibly damaging them , when the pickup cools some lightly tap around the cover, it should fall off if all the solder connecting was broken

I usually heat up the joint, and stick a single edge razor blade between the cover and bottom plate and let cool, then pull out the blade. Since the blade is stainless steel, solder won't stick to it. Repeat for the other joint. It usually leaves a clean surface on the cover and won't snag the coil. Just have to make sure not to go in too far with the razor blade and accidentally damage the coil, just enough to split the solder joint.

Next time I uncover I am gonna try this, Thanks Lex :slash::slash:

What's the procedure for a pickup that is snuggly potted with wax?
I don't have much experience with this, but what do you do with the wax?

what i did was do the razor blade thing with the solder. and to remove the cover from the wax i just pulled with all my finger strength until i got it off. safest way i think. its frustrating but you will get it off.

Do I melt it all off of the pickup? I really have no idea how to remove the wax

i use a hairdryer to soften it and then wipe it off.....
