Like most people here, I'll agree that their best days are behind them. Pretty much everything after Rattle and Hum was a waste, IMO.

OK, so they were experimenting with "their sound", trying not to stay in a rut, trying to innovate, I get that, and I admire it to an extent. I just didn't care for the product. It so happens that millions of people disagreed with me. Fine.

I'll give this new one a listen before I pass judgment.

Apparently a lot of people don't bother with actual facts around here - wait, sorry, it's a guitar forum! Almost forgot myself there.

I've listened to it a few times now. It's not actively bad like All That You blahblahblah and Atomic Bomb but not particularly memorably either. Apparently they have two or three more whole albums finished, I would have preferred to hear something more out there myself.

I just gave it a listen. Not bad, yet fairly bland and boring, like most of their recent stuff. There's really no excitement and drive in their music anymore.

This isn't so much U2 giving away an album as it is them trying to force it on everyone who uses iTunes.

So I deleted it as soon as I saw in the "cloud" - SUCK IT, BONO!

So anyway, it says I bought it, but can't find it anywhere in my library nor the download link. Where the **** is it?

I like the old U2 so I wanna give it a listen.

I had a nightmare finding mine too as I haven't used iTunes in years. Can't remember exactly how I found it now (at work), but it's there!

U2 gives away new album for free

Well no. Apple paid U2 anywhere from 40 to 100 million (not billion like I originally posted), so U2 isn't giving away anything. U2 may be the smartest band in the music business.

A few articles on why Apple and U2 may be doing this.

And yes, I'm a long time fan starting when I first heard them on WDRE and saw them at the Malibu Beach Club. Humble beginnings for sure.

Some tracks had decent parts/phrases (mostly Edge's) but...damn, is Bono's voice too prominent in the mix.

:wtf:

U2 wasn't paid anywhere near that much.

$100 million is the cost of the entire advertising promotion for the iPhone 6/iPhone 6 Plus/Apple Watch rollout over the next month. Of which the first track of the new U2 album is the background music. TV ads aren't cheap.

Glad you caught that. The billion figure would be ridiculous.

Yeah, that should have read million. My bad.
I'm not sure about that number being the entire ad promo including iPhones. The way I read it, and the details are murky, is that Apple paid U2 and Universal a blanket royalty and commitment to a global ad campaign for U2. No mention of what, if any, Apple tie ins will be in the commercial, though I'm sure there will be some.
Let's just say that U2 has made out very well, as has their record company.

I knew they were giving the album away already, but it wasn't until recently that I realized that they were forcing it on everyone. I was just minding my own business, listening to my music on shuffle and all of a sudden, BAM there's some U2 out of nowhere. Apparently it autodownloaded onto my iCloud. anyone know how to get rid of it?
