I really liked the first album. I turned down running spotlight at the Agora in Atlanta on their first tour...for penny beer night at Green's!

Thanks for the head's up ! Downloaded the album last night and listened to most of it on the way to work this morning. I really like it ( I am a fan and have enjoyed all of their albums except for the last one ). Still can't believe they released it for free.

U2 is one of those, "can't separate the artist from the music" bands for me.

..I just think of Bono in a Superman cape wearing those ridiculous giant sunglasses and can't take it seriously.

I'll give it a listen - the last album was a step forward from the two awful albums before it but to me their best years are behind them.

I saw them at the Tokyo Dome, the very last Zoo TV Tour show. PIL opened for them. I'd put it in the top 5 concerts I've ever been to.

That being said, they haven't done much in the last what, 10 years?

Politics aside, I know The Edge's "minimalist" guitar playing won't win any kudos from "shredmeisters" here but I've enjoyed the band quite a lot since "The Unforgettable Fire" days.

Hey props to U2. The record business is dead. Nobody is buying music today and there is no money to be made doing it. Back in the day, the model was to make a record then tour. The tour was meant to break even (cheap tickets), but the resulting album sales made the bands money. With the advent of file sharing, the model has changed. The music is now free, hopefully drawing fans to pay ridiculous prices for concert tickets. I just saw Tom Petty and his new album was supplied free with every ticket sold.

Its a new era and bands are testing the waters to see what works best.

Listened to the whole album last night and this morning. A couple of the tracks stuck with me. Worth more than I paid for it.

Nothing IMO compares to their "War" album, which I thought was groundbreaking when it was released -- much to the dismay of my bandmates back in the day!

Still can't believe they released it for free.

Apple released it for free. U2/UMG still got paid:

But releasing the album free to iTunes subscribers does not mean the band has given the album away. “We were paid,” Bono tells TIME. “I don’t believe in free music. Music is a sacrament.”

Apple gets the iTunes exclusive for five weeks and apparently will also be using the "The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)" song in upcoming Phone 6 promos.

well i'll take that with a grain of salt.
i've actually done a lot of work for various charities over many years.
and it didn't just involve signing a cheque. although i have made cash donations too. but getting your hands dirty and involved is a whole different ballgame.

Captain Obvious would point out mr bono is a zillionaire rockstar who has the luxury of spending his spare time and money on whatever cause suits him.
for us ordinary folk, finding time to look after our neighbors and others has to come after we make sure there is food on the table and a roof overhead for ourselves and our families.
no knock against bono. its great he chooses to feed others or support some cause rather than b uy another airplane, yacht or private island.
but it is kinda apples and oranges.
