Long time lurker, first time poster...
Looking through musician's friend on Friday I found a listing of a Murphy Lab 1968 Les Paul Custom Ultra Light Aged for very close to $4500. Says it's condition 3 Scratch and dent. No pictures, no description outside of the standard description for this guitar.

At that price though, I'm curious just how bad scratch and dent. Racked with curiosity I initiated an online chat to see if I could get anymore info. The guy said it was in the Oklahoma warehouse but couldn't get anything else.

I look up some videos on what scratch and dent condition 3 means - and see some broken headstocks and one that seems to have almost nothing wrong with it. Ooooo.. k....

So I call. The guy this time says he has a buddy in the warehouse, he'll get a few pictures. So I wait all day Saturday. No pictures.

On Sunday I take another look. It takes me multiple searches to get the listing to show up - open box, used, etc...

I call again - the guy can't find it to begin with (I gave him the sku#) - eventually comes back that they do have it, and he'll get some pictures. He does confirm that they will do a full refund and will give me free shipping back should I just go ahead and order it. I wait - no pictures.

I'm now completely obsessed with this guitar - which I in no way need but that's a bargain right??!!! (and yes I would tell my kids that it's not a bargain if you don't actually need it so we don't need to go there)

In a moment of madness I order it through the website. Site says it will be here by Thursday - ok!. Follow up email says 5 - 8 days.. :(. Oh well. At least I can stop obsessing.

Monday comes - it ships by fedex. great. Delivery info says it will be delivered Tuesday. Sure.... Tuesday comes - it's in Boston (where I live).. WHAT????? Obsessively watch the fedex page all day where it says it's in the depot. Have to pick my kid up from school - get back and the fedex guy is standing on my doorstep! Phew!!!

Unbox - and this is what I find. Sorry for the long description but this has all been so unlikely.

The main damage that I can find is a small chip off the top left corner of the headstock (see below) (can I call it medium aged???). A few minor little white marks on the neck and the top. $2500 saving??? Oooo... k....

Am I missing something dumb - do people only buy these to keep in pristine condition? Yes the pickups make a sound!

ok - one thing I'm noticing. There is a hum when the volume is turned up on the neck pickup. It stops when I touch a string or either pickup. Is that normal??

Wow!
Congratulations!
And welcome to the Forum.

Since you had a great deal, take it to a good luthier to install your favorite strings,
have a look at it and adjust everything. He can also determine the ground problem and fix it.

Very few guitars are dead silent if you’re not touching metal.
That’s the nature of high impedance sound designs.
If it goes away with your touch that’s completely normal.
Humbucking pickups counteract that, but interferences can be picked up in the wiring itself.

Your last pic looks exactly like the cover of this guitar instruction book I got from the library as a teenager. I thought it was the most beautiful guitar I’d ever seen. And it was a looong time before I could afford one!
Anyhow, super deal and killer looking LP!

OP, are you going to get a small bottle of black lacquer and some fine sandpaper to touch up the headstock chip?

Nice LP by the way. Was the $2,500 savings off of MSRP or MAP?

Edit: I just went to Sweetwater and saw that this guitar sells for $6,999 so my question about price is answered. :thumb:
