This showed up on Craigslist today. Text and photos follow. What are your thoughts? Real or fake? Also not discounting the possibility that the owner forgot a 1 in front of the 500 price in the title...

Gibson ES 335 TDC ***Needs a New Home*** - $500

From what I understood when I purchased it from EBay it's a 2006 es 335, and then I had a 1963 spec relic job done on it. All parts are vintage old stock, handwound PAF clones, Emerson Bumblebee capacitors, CTS pots, nickel trapeze tail piece, Kalamazoo Orange Label replacement for added authenticity to the relic, the finish is original with finish checking upon the entire guitar, I also had the nut replaced with a unbleached bone nut for better sustainability and tone, and Labella Jazz flat wounds brand new, I will also include a Fender Vintage reissue Brown Strap. No original case is provided, as only a gig bag came with it when I purchased it. Over all this is a great player, I just am not that into it and would like to go back to my django days.I will also include a Bugera BC15 15 Watts Tube amplifier as part of the deal. I will accept trades and $200 for a gypsy jazz guitar only (depending on the value of the trading guitar)

Might be a real guitar but a scam sale. Another recent CL guitar ad was using stolen pics of a real guitar from another site. Go slow if you are considering this one. No money changes hands until you see it and play it. $1500 is also cheap, most 335’s are starting at $2000+ used.

I'm not sure if this is a copy or not because they've gone to the effort of getting fake lacquer checking done, but they've got an awful pickguard on and by the looks, not used fret edge binding.

Off topic sorta but does anyone think its weird how Chinese builders rarely ever use fret edge binding on their replicas? It's the first thing I look for that raises suspicion. It's not definitive because yes, it could have been refretted and the newer Gibson USA models don't use it, but if you're copying a Custom Shop guitar, why would you not do that?

Even if he did forget a "1" in front of the $500 i'd be wary,$1500 still sounds to cheap with all of the work/parts he's listed.

On looks alone I think it looks kick ass. I really can't tell if it's fake since I really don't know 335's, at all.

The seller's environment does suggest he's quite meticulous and probably quite trusting too.

Fake. Horrible aging on the hardware, headstock serial number is a dead giveaway. Yes, they are offering reliced fakes now on those parts of the internet we wish wouldn't exist. My guess is, though, this guy had it relic'd to look more like the real deal and so that he could blame the inconsistencies on the aging.

Really, run away. That is something you'll never know what the hell it is, until you have been scammed.

He tried to confuse people, telling it's an "upgraded" model, but still, even if you remove the after market parts (basically everything on those picture it's NOT original), that is not a 2006 ES 335 (serial is also screaming!).

Serial stamp, headstock+logo+inlay, Neck Heel, Pickguard, Pickup rings, Bridge on anchors, every single bit of this shit is screaming scam/fake.

I'd swear we've seen that "custom made" bridge plate before??
This one looks familiar.

When it's too good to be true, it's too good to be true.

Some learn that at their own expense.
I know, I did :facepalm:… And it was not that much money and not a $1500+ price difference.

A Learning experience. There is always some kind of gain afterall.

I have a Memphis made ES339 and the serial number is inked on not stamped and it does NOT say "Made in USA" or anything else under the serial.

I can't find it with a quick search, but this same guitar/ad/etc came up a few weeks ago either here, or in another forum. The poster just bought it and it was a fake all the way.
I hope someone here can find that thread, the details of "what's wrong" were very well spelled out.

I can see the headstock is the wrong shape. Also, the pick guard is huge.
