Tom Petty has offered a $7,500 reward for information leading to the return of five guitars stolen from a soundstage in California.

The instruments were taken while Petty and his band the Heartbreakers were rehearsing for an upcoming world tour. The stolen items include a 1967 Blonde Rickenbacker, a Fender Broadcaster and a Dusenberg Mike Campbell Model, which belonged to Petty's sidekick Mike Campbell

AP: "The Culver Studios is a sprawling complex of 16 soundstages west of downtown Los Angeles."

I wonder what kind of security the Culver Studios has. A system of cameras and a rigorous checkin/checkout process would prevent this kind of theft.

The studios put up a nice facade of security. Put on a hard hat, carry a clipboard and you can walk right onto most of the studio lots...

Culver PD: "Mr Petty, there has been a theft from the Culver Studios. Five of your band's guitars were stolen."

Tom Petty: "Don't do me like that!"

I hope the Heartbreakers members get their Guitars back, but Tom Petty can kiss my ass. I hope he never gets his back.

Why am I so cold hearted against Tom?

I met him with my father when I was a young boy, I had a guitar with me and I asked him if he could sign it and his exact words were, "if I sign that, you could sell it for $10,000, so no I won't".

Now I can never listen to him when I hear his music. I hope the Heartbreakers members he their gear back though.

The reward is $75,000, not $7,500.

I was wondering why the low ball figure I saw at first...

Pretty crappy thing for him to say to some kid. The ego shines through in a very big way. Not sure if his signature is worth thousands, either... even to a collector. Ain't like he was John Lennon or Mozart or somebody like that.

A bit harsh. He has a point.

The reward is $75,000, not $7,500.

Not to argue but this from the Band's FB page:

"Thank you to the LA Times for getting the word out. $7,500.00 Reward no questions asked."

Where are you getting your information? Cite your source, please?

Actually, I stand corrected. Yahoo News ran this story this afternoon and the headline (and story) said $75K. They've since changed it back to $7,500.

Personally, I think he'd have better luck getting them back with $75K. :D
