I shouldadd that....in that clip...Im playign through a maxon od808 pedal which you can here clicking on a few seconds after the start of the clip....it kills the nice tone from the orange but gives me a little more output andd some fuller mids if the songs calls for it.....I dont like it but....it is useful playin covers in a band....with only a 3 band eq on the amp..it comes in handy now and then.

13 seconds in the maxon comes in.....hence the higher output and the warmth being killed off....my tone is FAR better without it but I use it as mentioned to twaek the tone a little for certain sounds.

I wish there was a clean boost that didnt crush this Juicy A Class orange tone I have.......the maxon is meant to be a good pedal for clean booting but it colours the tone too much in my opinion (not as badly as some pedals Ive had though!) I use it for a little edge...moody edge

I use TS808 for same reason- when I need more output. The only difference is that I use an external drive pedal (Cmatmods Brownie mostly), because I'm not satisfied with internal drive in my amp. I use Hayden Speakesy 50 combo.

For what its worth the SD pickups are great. Apologies if off topic.

I have had a pair of the vintage paf types in my Tokai since 1990 - I'd guess they'd be the same as those produced now?
A clearer and beefier bottom end, and the neck has good articulation without getting muddy.

Though highly subjective, here is an album I recorded guitars and Hammond for a few years ago.
The Tokai is on the title track - Daystripper.
If I recall, it's a cranked modern Fender Twin with (redknobs) and maybe a little Rat or Big Muff - cannot remember - sorry!

Matt Bioul - discover music, shows, pictures on thesixtyone

Excuse the album cover - its a Belgian artist...

What kind SD Pickups you used? I had a Tokai LS160 with SD Seth Lovers. Beautiful pickups. I have no problem getting them at any time. However, the bridge pickup has gone microphonic sometimes because they are unpotted. And as I wrote earlier I want to try something else.
Btw., cool music! And album cover looks very interesting :) No need to apologize. And I like Belgian beer :)

All I remember is them being called Vintage PAF.
They both have 59 on them and a letter to denote neck or bridge. I put them in 23 years ago and haven't thought about it since.:)

Most likely the TB59 then as both are all black bobbins. There were not as many options back in 1990 from where I got these!

I work for a company that sells musical instruments. We have the SH-1 set - both pickups are all black Bobbins. Like this:

Uh, those pickups were wound by someone special at Duncan. You don't see those every day. I'm guessing they sound great.

Ah...she seems like a nice lady. Nice little fact to know...and I like Tortillas :)
I got all my SD pups around the same time - also for my Strat and Telecaster.
They were really the only option where I lived in the UK at that time that were seen as vintage correct (pre-internet of course so what else would I know!) Everything else was coming off the back of 80's big hair rock etc...which was not my scene at all being into classic blues, rock and jazz.

cheers

Apparently she still works - or did until just a couple of years ago. Seymour takes a back seat to her, which I'm sure he acknowledges. Her specialty is Strat pickups, however.

The tortilla remark. Not sure about that one.

25 years ago I played punk and metal. I've had a lot of pickups, mostly DiMarzio. I would like to have them now. After all, old Tokai come with DiMarzio PAF's and SD :)

Punk? That's what I got the telecaster for!
When I mean options, it was all EMG stuff - and I lived on The Isle of Wight at the time.
I do wish I'd kept the original cream Tokai pickups, but I swapped them for a non working valve copicat - which sadly remained non working as the heads were shot and hard to find.

EMG stuff is evil :) I briefly used the EMG-81 on my Washburn G-1V in 1991.
I changed it back to the original Japanese Washburn pickup pretty quickly.

The SD 59's are good too...a bit more modern sounding than the stormy monday. Ive had both. A very Gary Moore like tone.

Got my Tokai LS260 :) I put Seth Lovers in it for a while. But this is not a final decision. Maybe they are a little too thin sounding pickups for me, especially bridge.
By the way, the guitar is amazing - it resonates well and looks nice. Even with the MKII pickups sounds great, but I want to do that would be even better :)
