OK, so I'm going to open up the 80 Standard tomorrow, now that I did a practice run on my 2001. I am going to use a razor blade to cut the solder. Do I have to re-solder it after I'm finished? or will it stay in place?

If it does have to be re-soldered, do I use any special tools? besides the normal soldering iron and solder?

Thanks in advance

Why don't you try it without the covers to see if you like how it sounds?

good plan, thanks. I will try it without the covers. I would only worry about junk getting trapped in there like cat hair and dust. My brother will re-seal the cover for me when I'm done, providing I want them back on. I'll leave them off if the sound is better, but this 80 sounds amazing with them on.

Since I was part of this thread and did say I would post pics of my pickups...here is a link to the pics I took last night. They are a combination of both TTops and Shaws.

Thanks for all the help gents!!! I am very pleased to find this information. I have a unique Les Paul...and that's fantastic. They also sound great, less muddy than my 2001, especially the rhythm pickup.

I have an 84 Custom with them. When I got the guitar I was surprised with how good it sounded and figured they were after market, but pulled them and that's how I learned about the Shaws. They are pretty much low gain compared to the 57s or BBs.

I really like them they are the best Gibson pickups since the PAF's.
Not suitable for high gain though, the Shaw designed Dirty Fingers from the same era are more suited for high gain

I get the same vibe from my 80 LPC..... I really dig the neck pup. Here's a little lead demo of the neck pup through my VOX AC50. My 12 year old daughter is playing the rhythm part with her Gibby MM.. (she's been playing guitar for 5 years).

YouTube lead solo to stairway to heaven

WOW. What a great, detailed, wiry sound. It's even more open than my Fralins. (Kudos to your daughter,BTW)

Original matched TS pair in my '82 LP Custom. A little dark compared to the '57 Classics I have in the CS-356, possibly just because they don't put out as much output and it has a tonal effect overall in conjunction with the amp. (similar to turning down the volume pot to clean it up and it loses a little bit of the highs). I have no idea what kind of stock electronics are in the original harness because I have never been able to remove the metal shielding plate inside the cover.
The bridge pickup does fine and seems to have noticeably more output than the neck, but the neck pup is a little muddy/weaker (take your pick) on the Tim Shaw pups in comparison to the '57 Classic.
I am the original owner and plan on keeping it stock...and quite minty I might add.
