Since some people found my comment a bit indelicate, let me rephrase it for the OP.

Does your mother know you're running amok with her credit card? :laugh2:

I'm more of a plain top with mineral streaks type, But she's a beaut none the less!
Good choice!

It looks like an amazing top but if you're not sure then you shouldn't go for it. Don't settle for something you don't see and think 'That's the one.'

When you're spending that much and it's going to be your number one you have to get it right, otherwise you'll always have that little thing in the back of your head that'll rear it's ugly head and make you feel awful the second you do see that special guitar.

You have to respect someone who would make that statement when he has a financial interest in you buying the guitar. I totally agree with his advice. I knew the guitar I wanted the moment I saw the first picture of it.

Mark ALWAYS give the BEST & most honest, accurate descriptions -- period. His frankness & truthfulness is unequaled in the guitar world. His assessments are most trustworthy! :applause:

And his Guitar packing is simply awesome, with his double carton etc. As a matter of fact I only know of one person who does a better job.............................me. :laugh2: :D

Great guy IMHO. I bought my Bloomfield (MB 024) from him several years ago. :thumb:

It's a good looking LP IMO and the colour is fantastic. Not red but more honey.
I think people obsess way too much over looks, to the point that the figuring has to be ridiculous to impress someone (it's not a beauty contest). The way the guitar looks is a factor but once you get to the level of looks that guitar has it's all about how it feels, plays and sounds.

I'm kickin' myself in the shins for failing to heed the call of the last 22013/2014 Iced Tea Transition Bursts that Mark had up. There's another one there but it's in Sunrise Teaburst and those other 2 with the mineral streaks in IT really floated my boat but I stalled!

I was looking at the one you posted again this morning and it is lovely but I'm haunted by something about the character of those others so will wait for that siren song to come along again and hopefully respond as I should have already done.

Mark's photos are great as are his descriptions, I'd be toast if I were more decisive or within driving distance I'm sure.

Botton line: looks killer to me but she will be your girl.

I would buy that guitar in a heartbeat. Beautiful top.

I had to learn through a friend, a few things to look for before I got my first ever historic, a 1999 R9.
I was a "newbie" even after gigging for 35 years, and playing 70's/80's/90's standards all those years.

My questions to him were more in line with top vs price.

I guess I have good taste, because every R8 or R9 that I like costs a fortune,
LOL.

The guitar that the OP is looking at is beautiful, even though I have no idea of the cost, or the year.

If it plays, sounds, and feels great, with that top, and from what I have seen of the dealer's other asking prices on his site (pretty darn fair), I say jump on it...:D

I picked my R9 based on the top and price. I was looking for something that resembled Jimmy Page's #2, I found it on Ebay. The guy accepted my offer of $3,200.00 for a 2004. That was $1,000. off the original purchase price. I knew I was going to replace just about everything e.g. pickups and hardware. It was great sounding with the original Burstbuckers but the Wizz PAF Premium took it to a whole other level. I've modded a Strat, Tele and Jazzmaster on the pickup side and I am convinced that this along with the electronics can make any guitar sound phenomenal. I have two other Standards a 2008 and 2012. Both sounded substantially better when I changed the caps. Both have PCB Circuit boards BTW.

Anyways, I picked an R9 based on looks and modded it to the enth degree. I have about $4,200.00 into and it looks and sounds great. Not bad for the price! I would suggest that you find a top you really like, you can always change a guitars sound.

Many of the 58 Les Pauls and some of the 59s had non book-matched tops, including many that it appeared that the wood was not from the same plank or tree! Does that affect pricing? IMHO, not really as some place a "premium" on highly flamed or "curly" maple and others on a "plain" top. Remember, the looks certainly don't determine the sound nor the playability!

It looks nice, buy it to keep it and play it for ever. You put in your head that this is my guitar you will have a better interaction with your music. Keep the business world away from a very personal matter. Resale is the worry of the ones that clean up after me. I sit down at my Steinway, I never thing about what a concert grand is selling for this week.
Play my Gretsch and wonder what is this baby worth. That really cripples my feel for a work I am learning. Stock market is a different thing.

Listen to the music not only the guitar. Most of these damn things look alike, a millimeter that way or this way. Big deal, it just turns in to a money game. That removes the human element from the total process. Get that one or the next one they are twins to the eye.
