Then, punctuation and spelling next? It,s widespread crap use of all on here,,who really cares if you can read it?

I admit it drives me crazy to see people just putting commas in where a period should be, no spaces at the end of a sentence and so on, but who am I to tell anyone else how they should write? Right?

So you would like to be both, first a toilet, THEN a P.O.S. :laugh2: But, you did not finish your thought, you would rather be a toilet THEN a P.O.S. THAN what?

Oh I get it now!

I'd rather be a Toilet then a P.O.S. :

But I'd rather be a policeman then an attorney.....yeah people shit on you , but you know deep down YOU are the one that just gets rid of it all. :hmm:

On a message board, I don't care much about other folks' spelling and grammar mistakes (although I mentally correct them :D) nor am I too concerned with my own. However, I do try to write correctly as I enjoy mangling the language on occasion and you can really do that effectively only after you've learned the rules. As long as whatever someone wrote is understandable and uses enough capitalization, punctuation and paragraphs so that I don't get a headache, it's all fine by me.

Also worth noting is that not everyone here speaks or writes English as their first language... and some of those folks write a heck of a lot better than those whose first language IS English.

Than compares. Then has to do with time.

I would rather be a hammer THAN a nail. THEN, after that, I would like to be a sparrow, rather THAN a snail.

What do you have to say about that, THEN?

When will you go to work on those pesky apostrophe abusers and homophone confusers?

They're driving me nuts with their mangling of the language. I'm mad as hell and not gonna take it any more!

Next try verb and noun agreements.

Do you mean like country songs (usually) that read "She Don't Wash My Dishes, No More." Rather than "Doesn't" and "Anymore."

How about the seemingly sophistacated that say: "You shouldn't be so harsh to Sheila and I."

Or the seemingly less sophisticated that say: "You are quicker than me." (rather "than I.")

Most of the worst "offenders" are Americans and American English is their first language. There are many ESL forum members who write more coherently than some of our 'mericans. :laugh2: :laugh2:

Common courtesy is dead. Or, some people are just too lazy to bother with writing correctly.

I think it has more to do with their lack of self respect, rather THAN their lack of courtesy, THEN again I could be wrong.

Still, on message boards, I'm a lot more forgiving as folks tend to write out their messages pretty quickly, especially during lively conversations so I consider the medium to be more forgiving. On the other hand, if I get two relatively identical resumes, one with spelling and grammatical errors and the other without, guess who is getting the job.

SKATTERBRANE, I think this is a useful post but it will be pointless against those who use "of" instead of "have" and such... just give up man, you cannot win this one :laugh2:

Do you have an example? I do not think I am aware of this.

I'm giving you a B+... If you could have used there and they're in that sentence as well it would have been an A.

One of my common mistakes is I often use phrases rather than complete sentences. I usually do this with longer posts, or descriptions. I am aware of it, and sometimes I go back and add (usually a subject, one that has already been established in an earlier sentence) to the phrase. Sometimes I do not bother.

Another bothersome habit, the misuse of the subjunctive.

Wrong: "I wish I WAS, a Kellogg's corn flake.

Right: "I wish I WERE a Kellogg's corn flake.

Wrong: "If she WAS an English muffin."

Right: "If she WERE an English muffin."
