This is the beloved Burst that Alex Conti used at the height of his career with Lake, Atlantis, and Rudolf Rock & die Schocker.

It made numerous appearances on records and videos. (Do any of you guys in Germany have any photos of it???)

The guitar was first refinished sometime prior to 1975…probably before 1974, and again in the late 70’s when the neck was busted in the States while opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd. (Alex was actually offered the slot to replace Ed King!)

Alex gave the guitar to George Gruhn who had Gibson Kalamazoo re-neck it with a (fortunately discovered) NOS neck.

Unfortunately, Gibson chose to paint it like a nice, shiny new Gibson, and Alex disliked the "clownburst" so bad that he sold the guitar after he got it back.

The guitar was then painted again in 2011 AND 2016 by Mathias Schindehütte, and finally Historic Makeovers in 2018. (Which they did not paint correctly either…walnut pore filler? Yikes!)

Well, I have officially ended the months long attempt to get "tag fade" and color correction on the ol' girl. So, here it is!

Prior to the last refinishing job by Kim, the guitar was noticed to have walnut pore filler in the mahogany. (Kind of ironic given how HM chose that also.) So the guitar was thought to most likely be have originally been a Goldtop since the serial number is too low for a Burst.

Well, I got a copy of the corresponding original factory ledgers and the number 8 1534, was a lap steel. So the first guitar refinisher (or Gibson) most likely made the same mistake Historic Makeovers did. Pretty understandable for 1974 since most finishers back then didn’t use red pore filler.

Anyway, enjoy this chunk or rock and roll history, it’s had a rough life, but it’s back in the game!

This ought to get interesting....

Oh brother , what a can of worms & outright total speculation.

Not to mention SPAM , even if not "for sale" or already "sold"...

Needs a better name IMO, "Sexy hexy what?" . I remember a german guitar mag asking Fee Waybill (The tubes) what he thought about "Lake", he replied "Those bearded boors?"
The "bearded boor burst" maybe?

I get it.

Sexy Hexy.

Sexy = well, we know what that means.
Hexy = "Hexe" is German for "witch", add a Y so it rhymes with Sexy.

Cool twist on German and English.

So "Sexy Hexy" was a revamp of "Stupid Cupid"?
It would seem so, wouldn't it?

"Rocken, bis die Schwarte kracht" = "High school confidential"
"Das is' ne party" = "let's have a party"
"Mein girl ist gold wert" = "My girl is red hot"

etc, you get the picture although I wouldn't use the word "revamp", more like "rape".

If you'd have lived through those dark days of german music you'd understand my sentiment.

Nice guitar though. I followed the saga in the original thread, like they say in Germany: "Ende gut, alles gut"
