We have a few friends that do home studio recording ...one is using yamaha monitors for mixing and didn't like the results he got ...so Randy loaned him a pair of monitors I built with Randy a few years back now he likes the results he gets now....these are speakers with very flat frequency response more in the Hi FI type using very high quality drivers....because these drivers are not being manufactured today to make clones of the monitors we have to do some reverse engineering and match up new drivers this will take a bit of research and testing ....Me and Randy have been building Hi FI speakers for over 20 years with this knowledge and experience me designing building boxes and Randy doing the crossovers we get good results ....the project will be a good 2 way nearfield passive and a larger 3 way passive for play back
Sounds very interesting. Please keep me informed, I would be interested in hearing them. Especially the 2 way passives. I currently have in my personal studio/treated room my old KRK V6's from way back, also use some passives...old Kef coda's III for various checks:) but mostly mixed on various Adams and passive Dynaudio M1's.
The Yamaha's your friend used, was that the NS 10's?

I'd be interested in these monitors as well. I currently use Paradigm Mini Monitors, which are technically hifi (I used to have an all Paradigm surround setup, but I've only got the Mini Monitors and Atoms left, sub and center are long sold as my HT days are gone), but I've found to sound VERY similar to NS-10s after A/Bing them in the same room when I was in college (film school, audio sweetening room). Close enough that it wasn't worth investing in a new set of speakers. I'd still like to have a more accurate monitor for my mixes.

So........I finally got my cab done enough to mount the Scumback yesterday and played my SIBLY.........WOW!! I've had amps before, but nothing like this. I'm not good at describing tone, but it's like I've got a penthouse apartment in Tone City!! One thing that really surprised me was how deep the bass notes get, yet stay articulate. Also my Studio VM LP used to sustain very well, but with this it's ridiculous how long it rings. Today, I was invited to a Jam session with about 20 musicians. When it was my turn to do a blues solo, I turned the master up a little, and rolled the volume back on my guitar, and the clean tone this puts out is amazing. I got lot of comments on how good my tone was.....I think I'll keep it :) Thanks Randy  (I'm such an idiot for waiting so long to get it going. I couldn't wait to get the amp and speaker, then I drop the ball on finishing the cab, oh well  ) The cab looks sweet though, I'll take some pics soon.

Congrats!!!

I sent the following to Randy.

"Randy,

I took my dad to a jam with me today and brought the mojobox. First off, ZERO feedback for the harp. Master around 3:00 gain around 1:00 and "more" around 10:00. His harp Mic volume was full up on leads and god damn there was no squeal. And he is using a mic with a crystal element! Give that a Google and see how many guys complain about the.feedback from crystal elements. The tone is worth it though. Anyways, it was dirty and raunchy and what a f*cking tone he had. The guys.couldn't believe it and neither could I. Towards the end I cranked her up using a tele my god it sounded beautiful. Serious sustain my god its a whole nother amp when cranked. Btw that presence switch really adds grit! I never cared for them before but on here it kicked ass. Major ass. Shit I can't believe how good it sounded actually. Maybe I can get some clips for you. The other guitarist there loved the sound so I'm going to give him your email."

Excellent!!

You're not an idiot, just cautious, like many. The important thing is that you took the "leap". This "leap" has yet to disappoint a single player. At least from what I've seen. Congrats!

I have a cabinet question for Phaez owners. Is a 2x12 at 60 watts good for handling an 18W SIBLY? Thanks!:thumb:

You could get away with half that if needed.

No, I wouldn't say that. These amps put out a lot more power than they are rated at. I would be willing to bet my JTM amp puts out 40 watts when wound up real good. A thirty watt cab, I would be careful with. Unless you were sure the speakers were rated conservatively.

+1 on this. I dimed my JTM in a 1x12 30W and am damn lucky I didn't blow up the speaker. I plan on upgrading to a 2x12 when possible, but right now I need to save my pennies. The wife and I are trying to get into a "grown up house".

My Asheville is 35 watts or so with the KT66's. The JTM is easily as loud or louder with the same speakers. It may be because of the compressed nature of the Asheville, but it sounds to me like the JTM is louder...pushing a lot more watts than it's rating.

Randy's amps are loud as shit

When it's all said and done my new combo will be running at 60 watts. Maybe a tad high. I'd be fine at probably 45ish... Then again this amp is way louder than 20 watt DR's I've played :hmm: So maybe 60 is fine.

That's interesting about the loudness with the same speakers, you mention the compressed nature of the Aville, are you getting more mids with the jtm?
Is the JTM circuit that much more efficient or something? Curious stuff...:hmm:

I was messing around with a db meter, and I always knew that gain made things sound louder than they are,but I didn't realize how much,or I should say I realized my cleans were a lot louder than I realized!
I'm going to get a better db meter and do some comparisons with different setups once I get the SIBLY set up.

Hmm. I'm still stuck on this speaker thing. I have a 2x12 now with vintage 30's in it. That is way more than I need to run an 18W head. My plan was to pull one V30 out and put a G12H30 in there to drop the cab to 60W. I'm not sure about that now though. Maybe 2x greenbacks for 50W is the way to go. I haven't had good experiences with those speakers though. Maybe a 1x12 50W cab? I do tend to think that 30W is a little low. I would be worried about blowing speakers out.

I too am a bit puzzled about the whole power rating thing. If an amp is rated at 18 watts (whether it is tube or not/whether it is Randy's or not) is it not 18 watts?
My cab is like 75 watts so I am not really worried abut blowing it but I don't understand why, if my DC is supposed to be 18 watts, I would have to think of it as 18watts* with an asteric as if it is really 45 watts or something.

It seems to me that when he builds it, with the components and multimeters it should be definitive that the amp is capable of only outputting the wattage that it is rated at, right? :hmm:

That 18 watts is clean. Don't know about you but on both of my amps the tubes are starting to break up pretty early on. From there on it gets louder and dirtier, way more than 20 watts, the Mojobox probably pushes out 45 watts no joke. Is been a long time since I played a real "old" bassman but i recall the volume not being too much greater than mine.

I find with a lot of gain I LOSE volume. That is why the Asheville sounds less loud than the JTM...because it is a heavily distorted amp.

That rating is only to about 4 on the volume knob. If you were to dime your master, and then turn up the gain until it just starts to break up...I mean just barely breakup...THAT is 18 watts. Everything after that is beyond the rating of the amp. It's only CLEAN power that the amp is rated at.:thumb:
It can also depend on how hot the tubes are biased. If they are biased at 80% dissipation, they are putting out more power. Tubes like the JJ 6V6 I have heard of being biased for 100% dissipation. It is a rule that you shouldn't exceed 70% dissipation but the JJ's can do it. I have actually heard of people getting MORE than 100% out of them...and this is without red plating, or failure of the tube. In fact, some say when they are biased that hot they sound better than NOS 6V6's. I think I have heard of some new Russian tubes able to take insanely high plate voltage and bias settings. I wouldn't try it with my gear.

Wattage ratings are generally a calculation based on the voltages and curve of the tune
