The most discussed guitarists and their tones

Since the 80's I've never heard of anyone searching for his tone. Even in recent memory of the forums and such, in my experience it was never even brought up. Slash more recently, but always ALWAYS do I hear about EVH and his Brown Sound.

What a diverse culture we live in.
And “Slashtone” is nothing more than a variation of Clapton’s woman tone.

People chase what they’re first exposed to.

I play in two bands, and go to see a lot of other bands in bars, clubs, and theaters. No one is sporting EVH tone.

Perhaps it went out of style with hair metal.

I'm a big fan of Slash and have seen him live several times. I don't get the tone intrigue with him though. I've never considered his tone as anything all that special or groundbreaking.

Most amateur guitar players I see (and hear) appear to be chasing craptone, whoever that was...

He kicked off the "Tone Chasing" at least in my book he did. I can think of none other that even comes close to the amount of gear and conversations about it.

That may be your experience. However people were chasing Clapton’s Bluesbreaker/Cream tones since those records were released. Even before there was an internet.
That is why the vintage Fender Champ is so sought after. An inexpensive little practice amp, still fetching about $500 a whack (excluding tweed, of course).
