Years ago my aunt lived in an old Victorian manor home in WV that had a rich history and had been many things (including an asylum at one point)

She found this portrait under a cubby hole under the stairs years ago, and hung it up. After that the family started seeing the woman from the portrait in the house...The towns people used to talk about seeing her looking out the attic window often. She was spotted coming down the stairs and other occasions. I saw her once when I was spending the night, I was in a large room with a fireplace, and she stood by that fireplace for a long time. The family dubbed her ''Elizabeth'' She always seemed very calm and benevolent - she even unlocked the door for my aunt when she had been locked out. I told her many years ago if she ever decided to part with the portrait I wanted it, and so I brought it home today.

The portrait itself is in rough shape, it's on canvas and is cracked, stained and tearing. I can't even begin to date it...but it's OLD. I am planning on taking it to a shop this week and see if it can be restored or repaired in any way, then get it custom framed (the original frame fell apart when my aunt moved recently)

I had my dad take this cell phone picture of it for me, because I wanted a copy for a virtual online sim I run, however I was hoping to have the picture cleaned up a bit. If anybody who is good in photoshop has some spare time and can clean this up a bit I'd be appreciative - Just the stain across her face is really all I'd like to see gone.

My aunt had told me she was thinking of taking it and getting it restored and reframed as a wedding gift - but with the shape it's in, I was very fearful that something might happen to it before she could do that, so I feel much better with it being here instead, and I'll just do that myself.

I love old things, old portraits and paintings especially - I love things linked with paranormal happenings, and it's easily now one of my cherished possessions. She has another old portrait like this - but of an actual family member, my great great grandfather I believe, that she said I could have as soon as she finds it.

:thumb: It's a good day!

Her spirit must feel honoured to have you go through all the trouble to restore a painting of her!

crazy, I used to live in an old house where there were some "strange goings-on", but never actually saw an apparition, I think I'd need to change my pants if I did

I'll take a swing at it.

I did something similar for another member (Olds442. But, in the end, another member actually ended up doing it in Hi-Res).

Here is the before/after:

Elizabeth means no harm to anybody, she's nothing to be afraid of. You might appreciate her if you ever lock yourself out of the house!

Looks like she's annoyed. "Damnit you painterboy, hurry up with painting my picture or I'll come back to haunt you in the afterlife."

You can't see it in the online copy - but the original is one of those that follows you with her eyes everywhere you go, you can't escape the stare. I love those - the hospital I work in is really old and has old portraits like that hanging up everywhere. Sometimes when I'm on a break I like to just walk down the halls and stare back at all the eyes staring at me as I walk by.

Nice old painting and a cool story.

Be careful, oil paint on canvas is a specialist restoration, and quite easy to do irreversible damage.

Just taking a guess here, So is it possible this was taken during the civil war period? She appears to be wearing a black dress indicating she might have been in morning of someone who passed away? She also appears to look rather somber (to me)

That is a haunting portrait, and I'm not talking merely in a supernatural context. What I find odd about it is that the face is obviously a photograph but the dress appears to be a drawing or painting. The head also seems to be a bit too large for the body. It is a stunning image with a lot of mystery to it. I hope you let us know if you are able to track down any details about it!

I wonder if she is related to Tommy Thayer?

...I could believe that. I've seen such things before. Along with experienced... one of the less benevolent haunted places. Next week I'm going for a visit there again, actually, I'll come back with stories.
Then we can all sit down and tease the few of us that think we've experienced supernatural occurrences, and talk about mushrooms :D

Good luck getting it cleaned up, by the way!
