The 2014 Melody Maker or 2014 LP Studio....NGD or not?

So I started playing with a band (punk & rockabilly) and I was finding the "50's neck" on my LPJ was causing problems with some of the faster songs. I also have a Epi Studio with a fat neck as well.

I decided to try some other gibbys side by side.

2014 Melody Maker and 2014 Studio with a '60's neck.

Both played well, more impressed with the MM due to the cost and playablity (being $400 less helps).

I guess the MM has a smaller scale neck? It is still stated as a '50's, but I found it smoother to play.

I loved the wine red studio but the cost and what I found was better playabilty (still struggling to catch up after so many years of not playing), I picked up the MM.

Besides being a NGD, a week ago was a new amp day as I picked up a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe iii. This is my first tube amp and it is awesome!

It's great, it takes care of the lack of P-90s as well.

In all actually, if I would have picked the MM up first, I wouldn't have gotten the LPJ.

I love my 2014 MM as well as one of my Jr Specials for rockabilly and punk. I use the MM more for the rockabilly stuff as the P90s in it have a bit more spank. For the people that have not played the MMs (I know I know not a real MM) pick one up and try one. They're great guitars.

I would think the scale length is still 24.75" on the MM. (Please correct me if I'm wrong folks). That's the same as the LP. It's the Gibson standard.

Fender Strats are 25.5.

All I know is I have no problem with the small girly hands I was born with on the MM neck compared to the LPJ.

That's why I wanted to try a 60's neck. Slmmer neck=easier neck? NOPE!

Funny... You've got great taste in guitars. I have '14 LPJ too:



I polished both with a Virtuoso Cleaner & Polish kit. I also use a combination of Scratch X and other polishes (PRS, Gibson). To do it "right", you typically need to do a full disassembly of the guitar. I usually remove ALL of the hardware and start with the base polishing (Virtuoso Cleaner or Scratch X or both). I use high quality polish clothes, but old soft cotton Ts work. Then a I move to a finish polish with Virtuoso Polish. Lastly, I'll do a final polish with PRS or Gibby polish. The more time you spend on each phase of polishing, the better the result. Sometimes, I will do first phase at least 2 or 3 times... this is when you really "cut" into the satin finish. Sometimes I'll do the 2nd phase 3 or 4 times... this really brings out the gloss and gives you the mirror type reflection.

A friend of mine sold her jr (it was beat to hell) without a case or gb for $700.

The new MM is the best kept secret of the 2014 lineup. Sure it's not like the old MMs. I find it to be a whole lot of bang for the buck. Some people polish them up to look pretty. I think they would make a great work horse for the serious player.

I prefer 60s necks and that's why I don't have a new MM. I'll probably pick one up during the close outs this season.
