Quite an accomplishment considering the Big 3 are billions in the red.

Tesla reaches profitability

Earlier this month, Tesla Motors announced a major corporate milestone and achieved company-wide profitability. The newest member of the global auto industry earned approximately $1 million on revenue of $20 million in July thanks to record sales of Roadster 2, the second iteration of Tesla's award-winning, all-electric sports car.

We shipped a record 109 vehicles in July and enjoyed a surge in new Roadster purchases. The strong financial results show that there is brisk demand for a unique car that offers performance with a clean conscience. We've delivered about 700 cars to customers so far, and new customers buy Roadsters every week. Our customers are proud to buy the Roadster: Not only will it beat virtually every other car off the line, but buying the Roadster helps fund development of more affordable, mainstream EVs for the mass market.

The highly acclaimed Roadster -- faster than a Porsche and twice as energy efficient as a Prius remains the only highway-capable electric vehicle for sale in North America or Europe. The 2010 model-year Roadster, which Tesla is building and shipping to customers now, features an array of enhancements over our first-generation car. Those include a more powerful heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, more comfortable seats and a more luxurious dashboard and cabin.

I love the idea of electric vehicles. I could care less about speed or looks. I am all about practicality. I actually have plans to convert a vehicle to all electric as soon as I move to a place where I have my own garage. I have done all the research and own a few books on the subject. If the price is right I will look into buying a tesla or maybe a GM Volt if they come out before I get my own garage. EV's are too good of an idea to not utilize as opposed to ICE's (internal combustion engines). I am a treehugger of sorts when it comes to taking care of the planet and using clean energy sources. My dream is to someday have a totally self sufficent farm where I create my own food and energy.

He refers to the cars relibility in "the real world", however, I don't believe the car is marketed as a track car.

If a person uses the car as a normal person would in the real world, (work, home, store, friends house, back in the garage to charge) I doubt they user will have the issues Top Gear did. I know I sure as heck don't drive over 200 miles a day, and this car is meant for people who don't.

Fair point. However if you are comparing apples with apples, their does seem to be some short comings. Least of all the fact it takes sixteen hours to recharge from the mains.
Top Gear compared it with a Lotus Elise and quite a few of them, do end up on the track in the hands of their owners at track days. So some of these issues would appear if a Tesla owner wanted to do a track day. After all it is supposed to be a sports car.
Also, if I was going to spend £90k on a sports car. I would like to think I could travel from my home to ... lets say Newquay in Cornwall (approx 280 miles away) with out spending a day in Exeter (I have nothing against Exeter by the way:)) while my car is charging.
So at this point in time. I can't see electric cars as a serious replacement for the internal combustion engined cars. Nice try though.:thumb:
