Terrorism is classically defined as the use of violence against chiefly civilian targets to achieve political upheaval or political goals. Sometimes terrorism has a component of guerrilla warfare such as using asymmetrical forces (suicide bombers, IEDs, armed paramilitants) against military or government targets. But in all cases, the objective is to achieve goals through the imposition of fear, usually with the component of wanting to severely undermine or destroy the enemy society.
The Founding Fathers didn't enact their ideals through attacking civilians or civilian institutions to cause Britain to bend to their whims by fear of violence. Rather, as Geo said, they pretty much threw down the gauntlet and told them, "If you want to rule us, then come and get it."
