I have been playing and performing electric guitar since 1964. I have listened to, observed and studied many of the classic rockers and bluesmen. I have concluded that of Hendrix, Clapton, Richards, Moore, Green, etc....of all the greats, Alvin Lee is the man.

I love the works of all those men, all geniuses, musically. But none of their performances (except perhaps Hendrix Red House and Purple Haze at Woodstock) draws up the emotion I feel inside when I hear Alvin play I'm Going Home at Woodstock and
The Bluest Blues. To me, it just does not get any better musically. Frankly, not all of his works stir me, but the ones that do are truly amazing.
When Hendrix played at Woodstock, everyone knew he was "the Man" by then. I think Alvin just blew it out of the water, because nobody had seen a guitarist play so fast and cleanly til then (that I am aware of).

I saw him in the early 80's opening for Black Sabbath, I believe. He was great as was his band, especially the second guitarist. Later I found out that it was Mick Taylor.

Alvin made Pete Townsend look like he didn't know what in the hell he was doing.

Thats comparing Apples and Oranges.

Those are two of my favorite guitarist but trying to compare them is ridiculous.

Unfortunatly (and maybe by Alvins own doing ) he has flown under the radar as a "guitar god".

Hi

Wow what a great forum about Alvin Lee. Like others I just stumbled across it. I to own an Alvin Lee ES335 guitar without the stickers. I've been trying to find info on this guitar and the web is very limited to none. I bought mine in summer of '07. I noticed that a few members gave some dates of '08 and '09 releases. I'm wondering if anyone knows the complete story on the no sticker version. It seems that member Alvinfan knows a lot and owns one himself. Since I'm new to this forum I need to figure out how to email a member and maybe post a pic of my guitar. Anyway for now if any owner of the Alvin Lee no sticker version knows more about the guitar in terms of weather it's a limited run or something else I'd love to hear the news.

By the way I have seen Alvin play 98, 99, and 2000 and had the opportunity to meet him. Very nice person and the best guitarist in book since I was a teenager.

Just checked all through this thread and I can't believe I missed it.
So to make every one of you jealous as hell, I used to see TYA in the Marquee every Friday night for a whole season. That was back in the sixties, of course. I got a 'special' of their second album 'Undead' recorded at Klooks Kleek but released on a Marquee date. That is one that is signed by all the band.
I have their first six albums.
Oh and on a little side note, they had an interesting support act at the Marquee gigs. An odd blues/jazz outfit with an excentric singer. Jethro Tull.
Those were some crazy nights.

I saw Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later Aug. 6, 1978 at the Oklahoma Jam, on a great bill that included Van Halen on their first national tour:

Then, of all the situations to see him in, I saw Alvin again in Oklahoma City in about 1986... opening for the Monkees.

Hi Alvin Lee fans!

@ Alvinfan
now thats an awsome collection you got there especially the Fendet Strat used "in Real Life Blues", congratulation!

Since I'm a BIG Alvin Lee fan myself I felt very lucky when I got the chance to see him perform LIVE in my Hometown of Stuttgart in july this summer:D His only concert in Germany by the way! I was blown away by his performance,he played like hell, just unbelievable how talented this man is. He REALLY is the best Rock'n'Roller EVER( after Chuck Berry;) And guess what, after the concert he threw his pick into the crowd and after most of the people left I looked for it and FOUND it!! you can imagine how lucky I feel.....
Cheers

Hi Johnny !

welcome aboard !!! And a big congratulation on finding Alvins pick !!! As you can see on my Wall of fame above I also have one. It was alittle easier for me because I had brought my wife for the concert and Alvin threw the pick directly down to her :applause: A great memory from a great concert.
Rock on !!! :dude:

...... and talking about fan items, I can inform you that those who want a miniature replica of Alvins legendary 1958 335 " Big Red " can get one on Ebay where they are frequently for sale.
You can of course also buy his signature " Big Red " but that is another price :)
Rock on !!!

old thread but I am a HUGE fan!!! I have taken an Epiphone Dot Studio and completely modded it. Bigsby Planet Wave tuners, Pearly gates knockoffs, Mighty Mite P90 where Alvin put his Strat pup. After all I'm a Gibson.epi fan!

I am 59 and back in the day, I was most into Alvin Lee, Johnny Winter, Kim Simmonds(Savoy Brown), Mark Farner, and Leslie West FWIW.

Deciding on whether to get the stickers. Below is a pic, but I am no good at photographing instruments.

Some got it, some ain't! I forgot to mention I have vol/tone for each pup, and the P90 is wired to the output just as alvin did.
