What is your set-up, amp, effects, etc? Mine are very warm, with and without covers. Changing sounds when changing pups? Yep, a Les Paul will do that with any pickup. Split (not tapped, that's something else), they work on any setting. You may need to check your wiring.

I'm running mine through a Fender Mustang I, no effect pedals, on Metal 2000 Preset. Coil tap doesn't work on clean channel for me but it does for the distortion presets.

About the "warm" problem, I got that fixed. Coil tap doesn't really work for me though.
