When interest rates are on the floor, asset bubbles happen, we are in a big one at the moment.

The great thing about cars...when prices are going up on one model, they are likely coming down on something else...it's just learning to adapt your taste to what's out of favor.

There is a limited amount of money out there for gear heads, and notoriously they chase what's hot...just like music junkies. If one model is on the upswing, you'll likely find them trying to give away what they have to raise cash for something new. The key is have an open mind and not solely lust for 1 thing. Be flexible - there are plenty of great cars and odds are slim you'll ever be able to own one of every thing you desire....and even slimmer you'll own them all at once.

And as far as financing...you'll find 30% down and a good credit union loan will do wonders for your financial flexibility. Even if it's 25 years old, you can find someone willing to finance your dream car if your proven financially responsible.

thanks :) haha I definitely wont. I have been saving like a maniac. I guess ill just have to keep it up for a bit longer. I just hope the prices dont continue to rise as fast as they are right now.

Have you also factored in what it will cost to maintain this beast, whatever it is as well? Too often in cases like this, the maintenance is also quite a bit, from tires to parts, let alone labor.

I wonder how much "Cash for Clunkers" had an effect on the used car market. People were turning in a ton nice cars with a lot of life left in the, only to have the cars crushed. Sure, it made newer cars fly off the shelves, but it came with a price.

OP- i thought you were talking about a Porsche 911. The market on them is bananas.

I think the collector car market is off the charts right now in my opinion.

I knew exactly what it was before I scrolled down. Don't settle, find the right one.

I have a friend who's dream is to own the same car. One day we'll get to race his dream Supra vs my dream RX7.
I've owned an 84 rx7 and an 86 two complete POS examples but they were fun to drive the crap out of.
I haven't checked the prices lately but I'm sure they're only slightly better than that... Maybe.

a friend of mine has a super clean early 80's rx7 but he's not a car guy so he couldnt care less what it is. he put one of those giant touch screen radios and a sub in it . it was all original before that.

yes, while insurance will be pretty high I can afford to take care of the car. the 2jz is a pretty low maintenance engine as long as you aren't rocketing at every stop light, turning up the boost really high and red lining it. I drive very carefully. once the car is 25 years old I can switch to collectors/historic plates.

Dude I messed around with a lot of Toyota stuff over the past year, and most of the parts can be found for relatively cheap.

I did a 74 Celica with my buddy. We pulled his 1 UZ from an LS400. We were going to put the 6 speed in, but he ended up selling the car. He went through a shop that does a lot of toyota stuff, and they were able to get his transmission shipped from Japan.

My roommate did the same thing for his 1UZ. It came straight from Japan, out of an SC 400. If you can, that might be the way to go, if you feel like going for a build. He passed on the transmission for right now. He wanted to get used to the car before he starts messing with turbos, so he passed and left the stock transmission.

japanese parts are cheaper because they aren't as good as the u.s. spec parts. parts can be found but as the years go by oem parts are running low and the reproduction parts suppliers know that.

the good transmissions are the getrag 6 speeds from germany. they are the factory transmissions for the twin turbo but they are not cheap.

to be honest, I wanted the twin turbo 6 speed just because that is the best option but what is really important to me is the shell of the car, the engine and transmission can always be swapped out.

as long as its renaissance red, has a targa top (removable roof) and black interior I will be happy. someone who owns a supra once said "there is nothing wrong with being content".

When I had my 84 I mounted a CD player in the glove box to keep the original center console.
My first new car I ever bought myself was a Mazda3, had the first one off the lot. The first thing I noticed about the interior was how the center console looked like an updated 1st gen Rx7.

I owned a 2003 nsx only 250 sold in the US that year. Sold it to buy a totally upgraded Porsche Carrera S with ceramic brakes all the features, and a pretty fast car. Porsche was a great car very refined but absolutely sucked compared to the nsx. Sold the nsx for $70K for 14000 miles. Today that car with same mileage is $80k 10 years later.
