I realize that there is so much wrong in the world with Ukraine, Gas Prices ,and the economy bites , but I gotta tell you folks in the Backstarge about my Saturday …… talk abut a pisser of a Day …. I was playing in a City called Forrest City , NC with my Acoustic Duo , Wood’nNickle ( Lets not start that one again ,lol ) and Its about a three hour ride to go to Tryon ,NC to meet upo with my partner and drive in with him .
About an hour on the road , I reach up into the Eyeglass holder above my head to grab my regular wire rimmed glasses with the Perscription lens and then I pull our HALF of my glasses because I crushed the frames and snapped them ! I was wearing my dark glasses with the perscription in them so I was able see well enough to drive to NC. I called my sister ho lives in Spartanburg and she met me at Costco where the nice young lady replaced the frames with my new Buddy Holly frames ,,, yup ,, Thick Black ones like Buddy Holily, Not the WIRE RIM style I like . But it worked ,, My Brother said I could possibly start a new hip trend .
So I get back on the road and drive to Greenville first to see our Drummer in the Double Naught Spies who had emergenvy surgery , He and I were supposed to play the gig in Forest City as a full band ,but an emergency came up sudden and Jim and I took the gig as the acoustic side of the Band . My buddy, David, had his Thyroid taken out due to cancer cells they found . He had a vocal cord removed at the same time , HE sings a lot of our songs in the Spies , And then a scan revealed that he had a tumor in his lung which was removed . But the Doctors got it all, so My glasses are a nothing problem in the real world ,, BTW ,,, he loved my frames !! “Nice Look Buddy Hiolly” he said !! Yea ,, I’m screwed.
Then , I get to the gig and it’s a great little city in Forrest City ,, quaint little town off of Hwy 74 between Tryon and Charlotte .
I took a plastic gas can and carved out a spot in it for tips for Gas and put “GAS CASH” on a label and put it on stage while we played . It was a young crowd , they were respectful but didnt recognize any of our set list . They wanted outlaw country tunes for a set list but they were nice and didnt heckle us or complain . The bar staff said they recognized talent for what we do as guitar players but that we were basically , background music all night ,,, the tip jar got us ,,,,,,,,,,NOTHING !! Zilch , nada, blank , dust , ,,,, My partner said it correct , Young people don’t carry cash ,its all Venmo and PayPal,,,
whille on stage I whipped my guitar cable behind me and dinged the front of my Brand New Taylor 514 CE .. First ding at the hands of an idiot ,,, me … an hour later I yanked the Guitar case latch off my Taylor case , yup ,, I did that too ..
But ,, The good news is that my buddy is home and safe from The cancer , I made it home safe and I got s cool 80 bucks in my pocket ,,,, hhhmmm,, glass frames cost 60, gas was 70 , food was 35 bucks ,,, did pretty good huh ,,,,but ,,, I got great friends here on the Backstage ,I own all the AA batteries you can own , a great wife , I am semi retired and I have gigs in North Carolina two straight weekends at wineries ,,, the gas can is going up too,,, Old people carry cash !!! I count my blessings in small things , because I read here on Backstage that Barry Bailey from Atlanta Rhythm Section passed away ,, hate that loved his playing growing up . He was a major influence with his raw tone and attack on the strings .Ok,,,, let the beating begin from the wise ass club here in Backstage ……..start right here ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,……

You spent twice what you made but the memories are so worth it.

We used to joke about buying all the cheater glasses from Dollar General and keeping a box of them around with all the other band gear for I broke or I forgot them emergencies.

You're right about the younger crowd. It's all swipe the plastic or a couple taps on the phone.

Grab your Taylor and half a gas can then head for the nearest gas station with a sign that says NEED TO SEE MY MOM.

I recently went the nerd glasses route myself. Got tired of always bending the wire rims out of shape. These babies are bulletproof.

Yeppers... have a pile of cheapies laying around the house. A pair slipped off top of head and into paint can yesterday.

Grabbed another pair and continued on.

I am 55 and do not carry a single red cent of cash. Ever.

If I saw you with the tip can and liked you enough to come see you again, I would withdraw a $20 to add to the can at the next gig.

Your economics sound like working musician economics to me. Unfortunately.

Your post and Steve's make me realize I don't want anything to do with the drinking crowd anymore, ever again.

You can find me safe on social medial. I'm just a modern guy. :thumb:

Been giving serious thought lately to approaching one of the local watering hole owners about a open jam night.

They only have three or four drunk locals most evenings in this middle of nowhere place so I'm sure they'd welcome a dozen or so musicians coming in and buying beverage and chow while making noise.
