So, if you're normally in the right lane going the speed limit and you find yourself behind 5 mph under grandma and a caravan behind her are you supposed to fall in line? Better yet, when you do get into the passing lane to pass, are you supposed to go 20 mph over in consideration for the speeders that ride the left?

I will not trade my safety for your convenience. You are part of the problem.

Being considerate of others on the road should not mean get out of my way, it should mean slow down and do the speed limit. Also, slower traffic keeps right, but if you remember from your drivers test, everyone is supposed to drive in the right lane. The left lane is for passing only.

Not out here it ain't. Negative on the posted speed limit, too. You'll get a ticket right quick doing 55 on the 405, for blocking the flow of traffic, no less. :laugh2:

While they were both behaving poorly, I believe full points should be awarded to the dumbass that crashed himself.

The only thing I find her at fault for is driving while holding a cell phone. Sure, it's distracted driving, but no different than tuning a radio knob. She was just holding it and nothing more. We all drive one handed sometimes. I saw nothing wrong with her driving. She was passing multiple box trucks on her right and a douche bag was tailgating her then passed on the right, making sure to coast beside her while flipping her off.

For everyone who thinks the woman was at fault ask yourself this. What if that was your wife? Mother? Daughter?

Fundamental driving laws are the same in all states. I dunno what the speed limit is on the 405 but if it's 55 and you get ticketed for doing the speed limit the ticket will hold no merit in traffic court. That's why I find that statement hard to believe.

I would have some very harsh words for my wife, mother, or daughter, if they drove like that lady in the video.

You're just flat wrong. In California, the leftmost lane is not for passing only, you can drive in it all freakin' day long.

And yes, that ticket will hold up in court; impeding the flow of traffic, I think it's called.

Would have been a different story if a traffic officer saw her pissing about with her 'phone while driving, or her obvious distraction caused her to lose control of the car though!

I used to work recovery, and have seen first hand the results of people's carelessness with vehicle. I still have nightmares about some of the things I've seen. Drive safe, drive defensive. No-one is invincible.

Isn't tailgating a distraction?

Respectfully, turning on a radio knob is quite different from grabbing your cell phone, locating your camera setting, and then the video option while driving. Simply put, she was looking for this outcome and clearly enjoyed it. If it was a loved one, I would expect her to use more sense and let the crazy guy behind her pass eventually by putting her right turn signal on. Or let him pass earlier by slowing just a bit before the trucks appeared.

“After about a minute, and me shaking my head, I pulled out my phone and started recording. I couldn’t move over because there were trucks in the right lane, and I sure as heck wasn’t going to speed on a rainy day with the roads being as slick as they were. I was turning left in about a half-mile when this happened,” the driver wrote.

My iPhone can access the camera from the lock screen in one swipe. I can pull mine up without even looking, and even if I had to, It's no different then reading an AM/FM tuning band for a moment.

Simply put, she was looking for this outcome and clearly enjoyed it.

She might have wanted this outcome. So what? Her and everyone else. There was no injury or loss of life. To say that she somehow caused it would be insane.

She was making a left turn soon. She had every right to be in the left lane.

Now let me ask you this, after seeing the video, what if the man in the truck was your son/husband/father/brother?

From your handbook.

To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane.

If there are only two lanes in your direction, pick the right lane for the smoothest driving.

I still don't believe it about getting a ticket for doing the speed limit.

well, since it's so easy to access the video camera on your phone that clearly makes it easy on ALL phones. I must be doing something wrong, for me its just as unsafe as texting to get it turned on and recording.

I've always understood that slower traffic should keep right, if someone is speeding behind you it's not your place to decide they're going too fast. Move over, let them pass and move back if you like. I'll flash my lights at ya, which i've always understood is a courtesy, but i won't tailgate

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

From the same paragraph:

"To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane. When you choose to drive slowly or enter or turn off the road, use the right lane."

Regarding tickets for doing the speed limit:

Why it's illegal to drive too slowly

"A couple of decades ago, Jim Gussler was pulled over while driving 60 mph in a 55-mph zone on Interstate 5 in California.

"Traffic was crazy and whizzing by me," he says. "It was the first time I'd been to California and the first time I'd encountered traffic like that."

He thought the officer was going to issue a ticket for driving 5 mph over the limit.

"Nope," Gussler says. "He politely explained that I was impeding traffic and needed to match the flow of traffic. He also explained that a slower vehicle was more dangerous than a speeding vehicle."

Gussler got off with a warning, but there's at least some research out there that supports that officer's claim."

That guy Pal upthread, you know the dripping wet douchebag who has vandalized over 100 cars? Where he splits lanes, it's illegal. In California, it's totally legal.

If that's not enough for you, just use Google like I did. :thumb:

She had an iPhone, just like mine. I saw it in her interview.

I see a big difference between hitting a button (something you can do without looking) and texting a conversation. Sure, it's still distracted driving, but so is music/radio, eating, smoking, kids screaming, tailgaters etc.

I've always understood that slower traffic should keep right, if someone is speeding behind you it's not your place to decide they're going too fast. Move over, let them pass and move back if you like. I'll flash my lights at ya, which i've always understood is a courtesy, but i won't tailgate

The left lane is for making left turns, which she was doing. She could not get over because she was passing vehicles that were in the right lane. As soon as she got ahead of them the truck raced beside her, cutting the other vehicles off, just so he could flip her off. She didn't have the opportunity to move over, and frankly, didn't have to because her turn was coming up. Remember, safety > convenience.

I'm intrigued at the way some of you think and where your focus is.

If I've given you the impression that I think she's to blame for the finger-wielding truck driver, my bad. On the contrary, he brought his fate onto himself in a rather spectacular fashion. :laugh2:

That said, I think she was also being an asshat. :slash:

I stand by my original observations. And I never said she "caused" it to happen, but she was happy it did. Very telling. Also, If I knew the 'tailgater' I would expect him, or her, to use more sense as well.

This all comes from personal observations while driving on major highways. I just try to use common sense while behind the wheel. First off, I never tailgate...just too dangerous, and I try to expect the unexpected by giving plenty of room. When some maniac gets behind me I don't take it personally. I can't honestly say I've always been like this, but I have learned through the years.

Again, I respect your stance on this, but I feel she had an agenda when she chose to pick up her phone...iPhone or not

From the same paragraph:

"To drive faster, pass, or turn left, use the left lane."

My logic is that the speed limit is the max speed allowable to drive. Also law states on two lane roads that you will pick the right lane for smoother driving. If I'm in the right lane and everyone in the right lane is doing the speed limit then there's no reason to get in the left lane except to turn left (and the occasional courtesy merge move over). Now when I come up behind 5 mph under grandma, only then do I merge into the left to pass, always minding the speed limit of course.

20 years ago a guy got a warning for not going with the flow of traffic that was going much faster than the speed limit.

I haven't read the whole thread but, has anyone asked yet why this driver was operating a moving vehicle and a video camera at the same time?
That would be at least "Driving without due care and attention" over here, regardless of what the other driver (or anyone else) was doing to provoke it.
Fair enough the guy seemed to have a monopoly on being a dick-head, but laughing like a drain at another person's possible injury....?
