I'm thinking about switching pu's in my les paul classic. What can you recommend to get a pretty Jimmy page-ish tone? How would it sound if i put BurstBucker 1 BurstBucker 2 in it?

Please advise me to do it or not to do it. I want a little more calm tone and not the harshness from the stock pu's.

Thanks!

My personal opinion is that Burstbuckers are harsh. Any of the boutique winders here can wind you a set that will be smooth as glass and still give you that Jimmy Page sound.

BBs are harsh or BB Pros are harsh? I find the BBs are perfect.
The Pros I find harsh in a LP but they're great in my ES...go figure!!

I'd also go with hand-wound picksups just because a) they're better and b) they don't cost that much more than Gibson pickups. SKATTERBRANE, Wolfetone, etc. There are more and I doubt you can go wrong with any of them.

New prices range from about $200 to $300 for a set. Look in the member classifieds for some good deals. You can sometimes get a pair for $125 to $150.

I got a nice, nickel-covered pair custom-wound by KevinT of Guitar Force. My Les Paul Forums - View Profile: kevinT

why not just try an EQ pedal and shape the pups you already have.

i find EQ's pedals work wonders and you can dial in a lot for a little $$$

Bareknuckles maybe? Or if you want a Gibson pu'p I'd suggest the Classic '57 and the Classic '57 plus. I had them installed in my Epi and couldn't be happier.

57 Classics all the way. Plus in the bridge, standard in the neck. There is a seller on eBay that sells them in Zebra. They're perfect.

The Burstbuckers are reported to have uneven coil winding which adds a little more edge to the tone while the Classic 57s have equal coil windings resulting in a tone often described as creamier.

Your best bet may be to go A/B an example of each to hear the difference. I can tell you the Classic 57 and 57+ combo sound warm and smoother in my Traditional than the BB Pros do but I don't presently have anything w/ BB 1 & 2s for a direct comparison.

You could try various GFS pickups to get an idea of what you like. They are cheap enough that you can try several and not spend a bunch of money. When you have found a configuration you like, you know what to shoot for in the higher-end pickups.

Hmm, so i've got like 10 models to choose from!:D

How about mixing a Burstbucker 3 in the bridge and a 57 in the neck?

Would that sound good?
