Anybody here know -
Has Gibson put Swiss-cheese holes in Les Paul Customs since 1983?

Have the Customs ALWAYS gotten the "weight-relieving" treatment since Gibson started doing it?

For some reason, I was thinking the Custom was still solid through some of the the years.
Can't find anything to confirm this, and I may very well be wrong.

What's the protocol?
The reissues (R6, R9, R0, etc.) don't get drilled or chambered from what I understand, eh?
Does this mean NONE of them did - not even in the nineties?

Looking at some LPCs lately, just curious.
Thanks in advance.

If my 89 custom is drilled, I would hate to have felt it before it was done. It is a heavy guitar. Also the custom that we have in the shop is a 2009 and a boat anchor as well.

Neo, In an emailed Gibson a while ago about this. They said nothing Gibson USA has had a solid-body since the early '80s. Customs weren't Custom Shop guitars until 2003/4; so...

Some Custom Shop Standards, Classics, special orders, etc, is anyone's guess.

Neo

The only non swiss are the Norlins any thing after about 82 went under the drill. There are some great ones out there.

CW

Edit: Like R9 said who knows about custom orders. Chances are they might have made few but unless
you buy from the original owner it be hard to tell which
few were solid.

Yeah, this is kinda what I figured - definitely maybe, eh? :hmm:

Tim (R9) is pretty thorough on this stuff, but I was wondering what had happened in some instances.

Gibson likes to keep us guessing, eh?
I realize that when Henry & the Gang took over, the late eighties/early nineties held some surprises.

Records are spotty - or completely lost - over many of those years.

Anyhow, I've been told by some LP Custom owners that their guitars (nineties) were NOT drilled.
Swore on a stack of Bibles and ready to fight about it, by God...
But how would they KNOW?

But yes, whatever Gibson says they did with them - I'm inclined to believe it.

Thanks for the input!

That right there was worth the price of admission.

 :D

So anyone knows of what are those weight relief holes filled with? Or are they as full of air as the chambered guitars?

Want to know if yours is drilled or not? Then do what I did - take it flying with you! When it passes through the X-Ray machine at the airport you can literally see inside it - and I saw the holes. :)

Gibson's website states that standard Customs are weight relieved. And boy, they weigh in at eight to nine pounds as it is.

I don't believe historic Customs are weight relieved, though. Of course, without ebony, we may not see them for a while.

Swiss cheese holes?! Why not American cheese holes?

Is nothing sacred to Henry J. anymore???

Take a 1/2" chisel and place sharp edge between the binding and the mahogany side and give it a good WHACK. Continue around the whole edge and then pry the maple top off from the body of the guitar. Post here whether it has weight relieved holes drilled. Then, toss out the custom and buy a new one 'cause your F****D now! :)

Your local court house has an x ray machine, get to know the guys that run it and they should let you come up and pass your guitar through it to see if it is weight relieved or not ( once you introduce yourself) , I do it when a guitar I have is in question. but on another note, there is a lot of posts regarding the likes or dislikes of weight relieved bodies, but here is a fact ...almost every guitar that Billy Gibbons owns and plays has been weight relieved either when built for him or after the fact by his personal luthier, even some of his necks are now weight relieved and his tone does not suffer....
