After reading countless "are Studios good" threads, I am taking the liberty to share my experience tonight. I broke out my 1993 wine red LPS that I have had since new. Yeah, the one that made me say "I need more of these".

I have 10 Les Pauls, I know, I don't need but one. I have Customs, Standards, Studios, a Pre -Historic and a Historic. So I uncorked the 93 Studio tonight and gave it a whirl to see if it still was the guitar I thought it once was. I am here to tell you it will stack up against any Les Paul, forgive me, ANY guitar I have! The tone is there, the "rock" tone that I craved and still does is there, the ebony fingerboard is slick and bright....I am still looking for its downfall.

Those of you wanting your first LP and wonder if a Studio is a "real" LP, I assure you, a 90's LP Studio is one hell of a guitar. :dude:

(sorry for the quick picture...)

The other one are really pretty though.

Your right they are great guitars!....
But with owning so many other great LP's my studios suffer in the getting played department.
I don't even buy some LP's to play them anymore. More or less I just love the hell out of them! I want them all... I don't care how it plays, just gimmie:laugh2:

I played quite a few Studios over the years, IMO they are normally great guitars. Gotta say, there was some quality in feel and sound with the '80s and '90s ones i've played that many of the newer ones do not seem to have. Maybe just a coincidence..

Wine Red and white are my favourite finishes on a Les Paul Studio.

AFAIK, the Wine Reds have the Rosewood board and Classic/Alpine Whites have the Ebony one.

The people that act like Studios are "lesser" Pauls are just snobs plain and simple. They give a player every bit of LP feel and Tone just without a few of the cosmetic appointments... And the value of those appointments is debatable. They look nice, but they don't add anything in the way of tone.

Even the perception of them being a "budget" guitar is kind of silly. Most of them aren't exactly bargain bin cheap... Just cheaper than most other Gibsons. I've owned a lot of Les Pauls over the years and covered a lot of Gibsons price points. Studios are awesome Les Pauls.

my 90' wine red has an ebony fretboard... was also my first les paul, which frankly set a high precedent for other les pauls I've bought. I can't say enough good about this guitar, I can play it better than any other guitar I have. It sounds fantastic and it plays great.

I've played other late eighties and early nineties studios with the same consistent results.

When I went looking for my LP I originally was going to go with one of the new faded studio models. I tried out 2 or 3 and then went to the traditionals. The guitar sounded great, I think studios are fantastic LP's. I went with a traditional simply because to my ears the burst bucker pick ups were a little more bright than the 57's and the 57's still let me easily squeeze out pinch harmonics and the like.

I liked it, but the 57's won, and so did the store, cuz the traditional was 1000 more lol!!

While I certainly love my Standard, my Studio Lite is by no means a lesser guitar. In a lot of ways, it's a superior instrument.

A wine red Studio with an ebony board and an alpine white Studio are both on my GAS list.

I have a quasi-n00b question about my Studio. Its a 1987 black Gibson LP Studio. As far as I know, everything is factory. For some reason, it's output is very low. Last night I ran through all of my guitars as a trouble-shooting exercise (including other Gibson LPs) - they ALL sounded better. I was playing through a JCM2000 on the lead 1 channel with a good amount of gain and volume (attenuated with a 16ohm hotplate). I was getting significantly less gain/overdrive/breakup, which I want when using this one LP Studio. This older Studio which is my main live guitar (which is probably just for sentimental reasons) just doesn't have the "balls" some of the other guitars have. (Even an Agile LP with their stock pickups sounded much better - ugh).

Is there any reason this particular guitar has less of an "output" for lack of a better term? would replacing the pots, etc help? or is it just a case of needed different pickups.

I've got a black 93 studio (also bought it new) and it's one of the best guitars that i've ever owned (which includes about 8 other LPs)
