I've tried it both ways and for me it really doesn't make a difference if I clean them or not. I still change them just as often.

This. I change them out when they start to get flat spots where they meet the fret. For me, that's about 8-10 hours of play.

I use exactly the same towels as Hardcore; they are fantastic. I had a lot of lint problems before finding these.

I find they last longer with a quick wipedown... especially in the summer when there is more sweat involved... I always find loose towel fibers stuck here and there and thought there must be something better. Some great suggestions here to try! Thanks again, guys! :thumb:

hmmm I don't know, I have never cleaned my strings. I never liked the fast fret or things like it, because they seem to make the board feel greasy. I have always just played it until the strings went dead, and then changed em, doing a good board cleaning when changing.

I only use a microfiber towel. I feel the same way about FF and all those greasy gadgets. Specially how they claim your strings will last forever:laugh2:

A little wipe down does the trick for me.

I use only the very best fabrics for my Babies......Fruit of the Loom.
I figured if it's good enough for my balls it's good enough for my strings. :naughty:

Microfibre cloth, a few minutes after I finish playing. Works great for me

I use spittle bottled up in a Supererdupa GHS fast-fret, freteeezzee spray bottle and a cut up cloth from my Grandpops applesacks.

Vintage all the way.

I have an aunt that is an OR technician....they throw away their OR cloths after each procedure, even if not used.

The are lint free and really great....when you fold them long-ways they lay perfectly from the nut to the bridge also.

Many years ago, when I was traveling with a road band, I would take home a dinner napkin, on the rare occasions when we ate at a nice restaurant. They turned out to be great for wiping strings and lay on the strings just like your OR towels.

I bet so as they are usually linen.....I also think that the baby diapers is about the same material as what I am talking about.

I too tried fast fret but didn't like it, I just change my strings at the start of each month, sometimes more often if I feel they are losing some brightness. A pack of strings costs about £4, not much considering how much nicer a new set of strings sounds, at least to my ears anyway.
