Steve Clark rocked! I saw them on the Hysteria tour in 1987 , it still stands as one of the fkin greatest shows I've been to.

When Pyromania came out I thought it was the greatest album of all time by any band, and to this day everytime I listen to it, I think I may have been right!
I'm the perfect age for a Led Zep/Def Leppard comparison.
I grew up in western Kansas with absolutely no rock radio.
I missed all the FM radio Led Zeppelin goodness in the seventies.
I was 15 when John Bonham died and Led Zep came to a screaching halt.
Def Leppard came out with High N Dry, and that single record had much to do with me playing guitar.

Oh, I had heard plenty of Led Zep songs but there was no way I could play them.
That stuff was way over my head.
Kiss was huge, and I could actually play some of those riffs.
AC/DC had already latched onto me with Highway to Hell.
Discovered Thin Lizzy and other bands on my own.

Remember - there was no MTV, no rock radio stations, no internet.
Had to find this stuff through friends and magazine articles.

But Def Leppard was the start of heavy riff-laden rock for me in the early eighties when I finished high school.
Scorpions, Judas Priest, etc...

Having my own car meant I could listen to my own music.
And drink beer.
And bang chicks.
And hang out with other people who liked the same things I did.

Started playing guitar, and hanging out with people who did that too.
Started going to concerts.

To this day, the dueling Les Paul/Marshalls thing makes me smile...

Steve Clark/Pete Willis got some legendary stuff on tape for High N Dry.
I saw 'em on the Pyromania tour and was blown away.
I could see where Pyromania was a logical progression.
Mutt Lange was producing ALL the big rock bands.
The songs were more complex, probably because they had more time/money for recording.

Only when Hysteria came out in 1987 did I see where the band was headed.
Absolute sh!t.

I've said it a million times - Def Leppard could have been another Led Zep.
Certainly coulda been another Judas Priest or any other great eighties metal band.

Instead, they became another Bay City Rollers - or Justin Bieber.

Fxcking shame.

His work on High and Dry was great. Had a little bit of Zep, Ac/DC, and Maiden.

On Through the Night was their best record. Nothing but raw rock on that. Wasted is still to this day one of my favorite songs.

I preach the gospel according to Def Leppard every chance I get, their greatness in the early days cannot be overstated imo.

Wow, it's been 20 years already? For some reason I thought of him as well.

There's a very good chance that the first thing I'll break into when I pick up my guitar is "Wasted"! I still have a cassette somewhere of Leppard in the early 80's from the "King Biscuit Flower Hour" Needless to say, It kicks ass!

Really liked Steve Clark and his playing.

Although I have to say Hysteria is their best album. It has all of their best songs on it. It was like a Greatest Hits CD. But I am known for the fact I gravitate towards the hits - but they are hits for a reason!

How old are you? I think a person's "favorite" album by any given band is often greatly dependent upon how old they were when it came out. I love hysteria, but I think pyromania smokes it on every level.

Absolute sh!t.

I think Hysteria ended up the way it did because of Rick Allen losing his arm. First, they had way more time to make the record than they would have otherwise. Second, when they started bringing in that new drum kit for him I think they wrote to that as opposed to writing how they would have with a normal kit.

While I wasn't a huge fan of the record when it came out, it has grown on me over the years.

Hysteria has aged very well IMO - and I still play it frequently.

22.

I just prefer the songs on Hysteria. Pour Some Sugar On Me is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time. Same with Animal, Love Bites, Rocket, Hysteria, Gods Of War, etc. All of my favorite Def Leppard songs are all on one album with the exception of Photograph from the Pyromania album. For me Pyromania is a close 2nd. But for me Hysteria is the desert island Lep album for me.

THIS is how to wear a rock guitar! And it's about time we had a kahler-equipped Les Paul in tribute!
