I am eying both of these for a purchase. Any insight as to why the Slash is less expensive? What are the advantages of both?

Edit, I mean I am planning on buying one or the other :)

They are Gibson USA, but pre-2014.

Buy the cheaper one.

The reason why the Slash is less expensive, is because Gibson unreasonably jacked up the prices of the 2014 models. In fact when the Slash model was first released last year, it was more expensive than the 2013 Standard.

Here are some differences:

Slash: Has nibs
2014 Standard: No nibs

Slash: 60s slim neck
2014 Standard: Slim asymmetrical neck with compound radius fingerboard

Slash: Slash APH-2 pickups
2014 Standard - Burstbucker Pro pickups

Slash: Slash caricature on headstock
2014 Standard: 120th Inlay on 12th fret

Slash: No fancy gimmicks with coil tapping, out of phasing etc/no printed circuit board.
2014 Standard: Printed circuit board and fancy coil tap and out of phase option.

I didn't know they were still available? What are they generally running, I thought they were like $4k or something stupid like that.

I paid 2499.00usd

From TDZ's specs, I like the Slash much better than the standard. But then again, now I am biased :)

BTW i got mine from ZZounds. They have 5 left.

I think the Slash is a good value. The 2014 Standards are overpriced. With the price hike and the premium for AAA, I don't think it's worth it.

Here's some other differences tzd didn't mention;

Slash vs Standard
  • Kluson Vintage vs Grover Locking
[*]TonePro's vs TonePro's Locking Bridge and Tail
    [*]Dunlop Straplocks vs Mushroom heads
    [*]Orange Drop vs Ceramic Capacitors
[*]Gold/Silver Reflectors with pointers vs Amber Top hats.

The reason the Slash is cheaper is that the market is saturated with Slash Sig LPs currently. Most who buy them are collectors and fan boys (myself included). Generally a working musician is not going to buy a guitar with Slash's emblem on the headstock to play on stage, unless they are in a Slash cover band. The Rossa Corso and Vermillion models were done because Slash felt there were fans who were upset they missed out on the AFD model. He felt this way they could make the same guitar available to those fans without upsetting the current AFD owners. Initially they were priced the same as the new 2013 standards, however, once released the demand was no where near what it was for the AFD models and so there was a large surplus available. As a result the prices started droppping like a rock. I've seen some offered on ebay as low as $2200 brand new.
The good thing is that the resale value on the Slash will not drop like it will with a new standard. Gibson is adding massive premiums to their 2014 lineup and people who pay them will never recoup that money if they attempt to resell. A 2nd hand standard can loose as much as 30-40% of it's value in 1 year after new purchase.

I have both, love both. The Slash I like a little bit better at the moment, only because of the pickups Id say. It sounds killer through my Marshalls. I paid 2000 OTD for my 2013 Standard and 1900 OTD for my Slash. But brand new fresh out of a dusty Gibson box. The problem with the Slash is theres still a lot of old stock probably due to the headstock, the initial pricing and the fact that they made 1200 of each color. That's a whole lot of guitars to move of one single signature model. I doubt a collector would buy one, I know if I was wanting one as sort of an investment Id pass. Buy it for the specs, theyre awesome guitars, ignore the headstock if it bothers you.

That headstock just kills it for me. It's a shame because I like the guitar.

The headstock thing doesn't bother me. There could be worse things on there than his logo. Black keys, Kiefer Sutherland etc.

Can someone explain the difference between a Rosso Corsa and a Vermillion? Is it only the color or is there something else? I apologize for being a nubie on this one.
