I always see the newest James Bond movie at least twice in the theater but with all the snow and being cooped up I decided to see it one more time at the dollar theater. $1.85 to be precise.
Long Winded Deep Thoughts By Jack Handy:
I must say that I liked the movie even more than the first two times; it grows on you. I'm a dummy when it comes to following a plot so the third time seems to come into focus a bit for me. It's still not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination. But the tone and balance they set with the blending of older Bond traditions with the more serious Craig era Bond was almost perfect. I'm a gadget lover and hater, I love them, but hate the way they always have a convenient use for them. It's too convenient much of the time. And when you get cutsey with humor it can detract from the overall tone of the movie. The first time I bristled at the funnier moments of Spectre, but the third time I liked them more, and they distracted me less. The OO9 play list where Frank Sinatra plays was funny but could you have imagined that in Casino Royale or Quantum Solace? Solace was gritty and the car chase insane, Spectre's chase was more about style and lighting. The old guy who's airbag deploys after being pushed by Bond is another Moore nod. Still it was a good blend of old and new school Bond.
The whole "he ain't heavy he's my brother" plot line felt like it was retrofitted for the film. Still it's cool to see Craigs Bond films continue to get deeper into his life past and present. We've never seen so much of the private Bond before, we even saw his apartment. Now that was unprecedented, and he needs to hang his pictures, someday. The theme song worked better this time around too, but it's still not really very memorable. I need a Bond melody hook, something strong that I'm humming when I leave. That lack of a memorable hook also makes the cinematic music less memorable too. Remember in Casino where they used that theme for the whole movie to great effect, not this time.
Oh yeah, that long beginning shot was fantastic and the helicopter bit before the song was off the charts for me. On the flip side, it would have been nice to see a classic Bondish ending where the two of them are stranded somewhere and he forgoes rescue for a couple hours to shag. Yeah baby, but no the ending was less than inspiring for my money. I wish they had worked out something better. Maybe this heavy will come back in the next film and validate the ending. Bloefeld sp? escapes and Bond has to come back to get him, and it takes two films, yeah baby! Oh yeah again, one part that didn't work for me was the plane chase. All of the sudden he's flying a plane right next to their SUV and I'm thinking where the hell did he get that? Plus the sequence looked all Hollywood, slick for the sake of being slick. Most of the action for Craigs films has been more rooted in reality. Oh well that's life. I also didn't see enough development in the story to justify them falling madly in love with each other. Meh on that one.
OK is that it? ..... The cinematography was wonderful but not as stunning as Skyfall. Love Q, and M and Monnypenny, great casting for all three. Q especially wouldn't be an old guy today. The computer geniuses of today are the young ones, the ones that were weened on a computer, inspired casting. Wish they had cast the actor that played Felix Leiter again, I thought his character was pretty cool and laid back. I'd love to see more of him in the next one if the make one with Craig. Guess that's most of it, rambling on and on and on till the break of dawn.
On a scale of 1 to 10 with all the Bond films in mind, I'd have to give it a solid 8. They were shooting for the stars with this one and they almost made it, so so close. This bit of nonsense has been brought to you shaken and not stirred, or was it stirred and not shaken, oh I don't know, I can never remember these things. Love Long And Prosper!
