Fair enough, each to their own. I dont know how years may have affected the Special II's but i do know that I scored a winner in 1997. I havent played any of the newer models though. I honestly wouldnt know if they got better or worse.

My pickups have the following size...

70x40 mm Humbucker
70x30 mm Mini-Humb.
82x35 mm P90

now tell me how you do it ?

Wait a second...is that mini from a Deluxe or a Firebird?
The Deluxe mini with the plastic mount ring should be the same size as the P90.
Don't know about the Firebird.

The closest I have to a Special II (other than my Special I) now is a laminated body 2001 E-Series Basher. It sounded nice and really "bright" (my laminated backup Junior is pretty bright as well; I wonder if all of the laminated body guitars are that way), and has a nice, fat maple neck, but I've since stripped it of all of its parts for a rebuild project. I just have to decide what to do with it.

Before she was stripped:

I'm definitely not negative on them. I think they have picked up on the quality of them as of late, as they certainly *look* better these days construction-wise. I remember not liking the neck or the pickups when I tried a few out; they just sounded a bit harsh to me. The neck on my Junior was absolutely perfect, though, and I went with that one. It's still my #1 :)

As with all lower-cost guitars (and even higher-priced ones), there are good and bad ones. Maybe I just got unlucky that day and was party to a bad batch. This thread has convinced me to play one again the next time I'm in GC or Firehouse, though :)
