Sound card upgrade

Hello gentlemen,
I'm in need of a sound card with more analog outputs.
Right now I'm using a Focusrite 18i8, which has only 2 main outs.

My problem is that in a live situation I'd rather send to the mixer different signals for the FOH and the stage monitors, but right now I can only have the FOH sound on stage.

My question is, would a Motu 828mk2 be "too old" hardware-wise to keep up with my needs?

Consider that I'm using an MBP from mid 2011, with 8GB Ram, Ableton Live and 7/8 inputs live (5 synths, 2 mics and a guitar)

Looks like your unit has SPDIF I/O as well.

You could try something like this to get 2 more channels of audio out.

My Saffires offer different assignable streams to SPDIF and mains out.
Yours might work the same.
SPDIF by spec is a stereo (2 channel) signal.

I thought about using the SPDIF out, but considering the smd2a costs 130$, I'd spend less selling my 18i8 to get a bigger sound card!

Also I was talking with the other members of the band, and realized we'd need more outputs.
It would be:
2 main outs without voices and guitar
3 outs to send to the mixer with voices and guitar
2 outputs for the IEM

So this way the sound guy can mix the stuff as it works best without us having to modify settings on mixcontrol

I'm talking with a guy for a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, think I'll get that one!

edit: I'd get the saffire pro 40 for about 250€, hoping to sell the 18i8 for about 200 it would be a nice deal

The motu 828 mk2 would give you 2 main outs + 8 other analogue outs.
Older unit, Still supported & works as expected on latest Mac OS.

I have 2 saffire pro 40's! Love them!

They come with a mix utility program (a virtual patchbay & mixer) That takes some getting used to because it is very flexible!

It can even be used in the field AS your mixer using the firewire connection to a laptop.

The pro 40 out of the box already has 4 outputs; 2 main(monitor in white stripe) and 2 independent headphone outs. Plus 6 more line outs to equal the 8 inputs.

FWIW I run mine in series with my mixer. I bought a small 12 ft XLR Male to 1/4 balanced snake.

I assign each output to the same number input.

I then plug the snake XLR's 1-8 into my mixer 1-8.

Plug all your mics into saffire inputs (1&2 are on the front)

Now you can record on all 8 if you want.

In your case I would plug the snake into 3-8 and leave 1 and 2 open for now.

You can also send monitor mixes to IEM from your mixer OR using 1 of the pro 40 headphone outs.

You could send mains mix out of lines 1 and 2 that you left open as mentioned above for this reason.

Outputs 3-8 are already going into your mixer. Mix away!

you can also record this mess if you have a laptop with firewire and asio support.

Mine is rock solid under win 7.

For 8 ins & 8 outs, Mac OS, mid range budget, I'd suggest metric halo ,, but it may be overkill . $ wise.
quality or quantity. the wallet always makes the final decision.

Metric Halo is a little bit out of our league haha

I'll call the guy tomorrow and hope to get the saffire by thursday evening.
I already have a rack with the IEM and space for a power conditioner that will come next.

Thanks everyone!
