Byoc rams head has the most versatility imo. Its fuzz and be prepared for it being fuzz.

Which Muff would give me a nasty Neil Young grungy sound going into a Marshall? I want the notes to come through, but basically sound like they're destroying the equipment that they're coming through, if that makes sense. It'll be for classic rock stuff, not metal or hardcore.

i thought he used the drive on his amps

dont forget he has the p90 that has gone microphonic, that probably contributes a lot to his sound

Yeah the Neil Young distorted sound was a cranked Tweed Deluxe Fender, which when cranked has a thicker fuzzier distorted tone. Pedals I've found to recreate this are the Rockbox Red Dog (have it and love it), Mojo Hand Mule, or a Way Huge Red Llama (if you can afford an original as they haven't been reissued yet). The Red Dog and the Mule are Red Llama clones. The Red Llama is the closest I've heard to that cranked Tweed sound. Catalinbread does make a nice Tweed in the box as well called a Formula No. 5 but doesn't have the same fuzzlike quality the Llama and Llama clones have. I keep waiting for Way Huge to reissue the Llama since they've went ahead and reissued the other famous ones (Green Rhino, Aqua Puss, etc) and the Llama is one of their biggest known pedals.

If you can get one - get the Rockbox Red Dog, otherwise get a Mojo Hand Mule. It's a great fuzzy distortion sound that's perfect. I can do a perfect "Cinnamon Girl" tone with my Red Dog.

Yeah, I figured it's the amp being punished, but rest assured, I'm not buying an amp to get that sound. :)
I didn't know about the busted P-90. I have BBP's. I wonder if a Muff would get me there, or if I should just blast my Beano into a blasted FD-2 into a blasted 800. I'm basically looking for mud, but clearly defined. ;) If a BM can get me there "in 1", then sweet.
Otherwise, I guess I'll look into finding some sucker to lend me his old Fender for a few sessions. Heh, heh, heh...

so the muff came in a few weeks ago and i have been messing with it. its great :)
to me it sounds like either extremely fat fuzz or distotion with a lot of hair on its legs. either way im loving it and the tone. sounds good!

w3rd, thats what i got

Okay--I wasn't going to explain it--I'm sure most of you got it.

But because I love this whole part of the TV show (mercilessly truncated in the movie) and I feel like watching it again, and posting it--here it is.

its in the movie too, which was really good.

but i thought it was 32 in the movie

There's a lot missing from that scene in the movie--like the philosophers and more dialogue with Deep Thought--they just leave the jist of the 42 & not knowing the question.

well aged sound
it looks like you found it in a puddle or something. it definitely has lived an interesting life.

It was okay--some good stuff--just not as funny as the TV series--even if the actors, overall, were better.
