Up for sale is my 1953 Gibson ES-175 in Natural finish. I've been wrestling with this one for a while, but I just don't play this enough to justify keeping it around.

It plays really nicely and the electronics work great.

This one was never drilled for a second strap button.

In terms of provenance, I bought this from the previous owner, who purchased it from Olivia's Vintage in 2003. They obtained it locally from the son of the original owner, who got it new.

At some point prior to my ownership, the guitar had an output jack repair. Whomever did the repair did a great job in terms of stability, but didn't really make any effort to match the maple grain/figuring. It also doesn't show under a black light, which indicates that they may have sprayed some clear over the whole guitar at the time of the repair.

Overall, it's in really nice condition, with some expected nitro finish checking, but really not a lot of wear or dings.

The knobs are vintage 1950s top hats, which existed between around 1955-1960, so the original owner must have swapped out the barrel/speed knobs for these back in the day for some reason (perhaps when the jack repair was being done).

Weight is 5 lb, 3.4 oz.

Neck thickness measurements are as follows:
  • 1st fret: 0.831"
  • 7th fret: 0.895"
  • 10th fret: 0.928"

Sale includes the original brown hardshell case with pink interior. It's also in good shape for its age (original handle still intact).

Asking $3495 PP/shipped ConUS only.

If I hadn't literally just bought a '56 blonde 175 last Tuesday I'd grab this.

This one's in fantastic condition and it's not so easy to find a super light weight example. 5.3 lbs must feel like nothing.

There's nothing like a feather weight, highly acoustic 50's 175. IMO

Thanks, Brent! It's just my luck that you repeatedly tried to get me to sell you this over the past year or two and then when I was finally ready, I missed you by a few days. :laugh2:

That is stunning… Are those the original frets?
I was getting ready to say yes, but looking closely, I'm not 100% sure about that. It's possible that it's been refretted at some point.

The 175 looks best in the blonde finish, really evokes the 50s, mid-century modern feel.

I'm surprised the neck is so thin. The 175s of 1950s vintage that I've played felt at least like .90" @ 1st fret.

Big thumbs-up check for a huge playability issue: Nice clean undented, unchipped, unworn neck. No hanging up when making those fast chord changes.

Re-fret? No biggie, expected really for a guitar of that vintage.
Input jack repair? Again, no biggie. That's a vulnerable area and the repair is well done.

Very fair price too.
