Well, in Houston, so not exactly local to me anymore.

But it's funny, she keeps telling me about all of the stupid drama that this band stirs up... And I find it somehow... Relaxing.

I haven't been in a typical band situation in years. I have a small crew of close friends that I collaborate with, and nothing ever gets stupid.

Hearing about my manager friend's goofy band problems is somehow cathartic and entertaining to me... All of that crap that causes you grief when you're in a band... She's dealing with all of it, and telling me the stories.

Lead singer is a prima Donna with a big ego and low self esteem... Keeps telling his band mates it's HIS band, and crying... Yes, crying, when his feelings get hurt.

The drummer is a drunk apparently. The bass player is solid, but may leave any minute because he's sick of the rest of them, and the guitar player thinks the band is HIS too.

Sound familiar to any of you? :laugh2:

Anyway, I hated that kind of shit when I was gigging in bands, but it's funny to hear this stuff when I don't have to deal with it. I'm not sure exactly why.

She keeps asking me advise, and so I give her the best I can... Usually along the lines of "The singer is a big pussy, tell him to quit being a baby." And "Don't let the drummer drink until after the show. Watch him like a hawk."

She's actually grateful for the advice. :D

I would venture that warm feeling you're experiencing is due to the confirmation that people really CAN be that stupid...even other people. :laugh2:

years ago I played drums with a band . after 2 years of the band situation , it made me give up the drums entirely . after that I dove into analog synths and building __ because it was something that I could do on my own

now that I play guitar , I can't really see myself wanting to be part of a band situation again . solo __ or sitting in on an improv set possibly

( the older I get , I'm less into collaborating with others . I haven't figured out if that's a good or a bad thing yet )

Why is that the drummer always get the bad rap? Oh, that because he's the drummer.

I'd hate to even attempt to manage a rock band. It seems it would be a life of misery, and babysitting.

Yeah, sounds like I gotta fire my band's manager for telling stories out of school, goddamnit.

Different genres garner different personalities - originals tend to bring out the confident and capable.
The very high end covers like the Fab Faux also fall into this realm.

A lot of the back and forth is phony smiles - air kisses etc. But the rest of it is real.
Even when you dislike someone; if you are seated with friends and looking to be out and about, no better place than support your own. And for the most part the support amongst ourselves is reciprocated.

I might wonder if it is an age related issue?

If she really wants the band to succeed, she should sit them down and bluntly tell them what their problems are; singer and guitar player, whose band is it?

One? The other? Both? Sort it. Drummer this isn't your excise to drink. Cut it out in a band situation, any band situation, or get out. Bass player, we are doing this because you are rock solid and we need you.

I wish I had a decent outside voice to help moderate discussions in my band.

Oh regrets. :D

Also, if the singer isn't that great and is just a big whiny pussy, send him packing and get a good one. Or teach the guitar player to sing if the others prefer him (or her?).

You want drama! Get a couple of chicks in your band! Still too boring? Bang one a few times. Watch the fireworks!

A band manager can act as an intermediary for internal wrangles, but it must be remembered that the manager works for the band, and not the other way around.

Well... Further disclosure. I've known this woman for over twenty years. She's an ex of mine, so she feels comfortable telling me what's up... Mostly because she trusts my input.

She's in a related field, and is great at it. These guys approached her, and she sees it as a "project" not her career.

She's also about to walk because of the the aforementioned behavior by this band, and the fact that they resist listening to her.

But I offer pearls of wisdom... They're having a record release party, and I suggested making the singer sit in a kiddie pool full of live snakes while people throw rings around his head in order to win a free cd.

She liked that idea. :)

Your friend has balls tackling that situation, hope she's getting paid good.

As far as the drunk, every band has 1...it's an omen lol.
